10 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | JULY 2026 By Tina Pauro, Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee (EPAC) Emergencies oen happen without warning, but having a few simple safety items around your home can make a big dierence when seconds count. e Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee (EPAC) encourages residents to take a few moments to check whether these important items are available and ready to use. Fire Blanket: One of the newest kitchen safety tools gaining popularity is the re blanket. ese compact blankets are designed to quickly smother small stove or grease res without the mess of a re extinguisher. ey are easy to store near the kitchen and simple to use, making them an excellent addition to every home. Fire Extinguisher (ABC-Rated): Every household should also have at least one ABC-rated re extinguisher. ABC extinguishers are designed to handle common res involving ordinary materials, ammable liquids, and electrical equipment. However, owning one is only half the battle — regular maintenance is important. Be sure to: • Conrm the extinguisher is still within its recommended service life. • Make sure the pressure dial remains in the green zone. • Gently shake or invert the extinguisher occasionally to help prevent settling. Gas and Water Shuto Tool: Another oen- overlooked item is a gas and water shuto tool or multi-purpose emergency wrench. Aer a major earthquake or plumbing emergency, being able to quickly shut o utilities may help prevent additional damage to your home. Many homes in our community have an additional gas shuto valve located inside the lower cabinet next to the stove. Remember, only the gas company should restore service and turn the gas back on. Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors: ese units are also critical safety devices that save lives every year. Test them regularly and replace batteries as recommended. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, making detectors especially important. First Aid Kit: Finally, every home should maintain a well-stocked rst aid kit. Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, gloves, medications, and any personal medical supplies you may need during an emergency. Preparedness does not have to be expensive or complicated. A few simple tools, properly maintained, can help protect both your home and your family when unexpected situations arise. EPAC is always looking for volunteers; we will train.
