30 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2026 | Newbies, the official welcoming group for residents of Ocean Hills Country Club, hosts quarterly potlucks to help new and longtime neighbors connect. Our goal is simple: that every guest leaves with new friendships and a stronger sense of community. Getting involved is the fastest way to feel at home at OHCC. Joining clubs and volunteering opens the door to connection, fun, and shared purpose. We encourage all Newbies to explore the many clubs our community offers and find meaningful ways to contribute. Life at OHCC often feels like a year-round summer camp — and we're so glad you're here! After the December event, Lynn and Rosemary will be stepping down, and we are looking for new leaders to organize Newbies. We've run the group for nearly four years, and we believe fresh ideas and new energy are required to keep Newbies going. If you're interested, we will gladly train and support you during the transition. Our most recent Newbies gathering was held on June 27. We'll share all the details in next month's issue. Yet over the past several decades, Washington State has quietly established itself as one of the nation's premier wine- producing regions. Blessed with warm summer days, cool nights, and fertile soils east of the Cascade Mountains, Washington has become famous for producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Among the many varieties grown there, several stand out as the state's most popular and widely celebrated wines. Red wines dominate Washington's reputation, with Cabernet Sauvignon leading the way. Rich, bold, and elegant, Washington Cabernet Sauvignon combines ripe fruit flavors with balanced acidity and refined tannins. Unlike some heavier California versions, Washington Cabernets often display vibrant notes of blackberry, black cherry, cassis, and hints of herbs or cocoa. Regions such as the Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley have helped make this grape one of the state's signature stars. Merlot has also played a major role in Washington's success story. Long before the grape experienced declining popularity elsewhere, Washington winemakers demonstrated that Merlot could be sophisticated and expressive. Washington Merlots frequently deliver flavors of plum, cherry, dark berries, and soft spice, creating approachable yet complex wines. Another rising favorite is Syrah. Washington's climate seems ideally suited for producing Syrah's that combine richness with structure. These wines commonly reveal dark fruit flavors accompanied by black pepper, smoked meat, and earthy undertones. Wine lovers increasingly appreciate Washington Syrah for its versatility with food and its distinctive style. Among white wines, Chardonnay remains the most widely enjoyed. Washington Chardonnays often offer bright apple and pear flavors with refreshing acidity, sometimes featuring subtle oak influences. Riesling also holds a special place in Washington wine culture. The state has earned worldwide recognition for producing Rieslings ranging from dry to sweet, displaying lively citrus, peach, and floral characteristics. Washington State continues to gain international recognition because its wines combine quality, value, and unique regional expression. For wine lovers seeking exceptional bottles beyond California, the Pacific Northwest offers a world-class experience waiting to be discovered.
