16 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2026 | There were berets, fedoras, Padres baseball caps and everything in between at the super fun Crazy Hat Night party last month, when Smokin' Guns once again brought energy, rhythm and music that kept our dance f loor rocking. Thanks to Celeste Szot and her crew for hosting the event. With summer in full swing, let's all head back to the Lanai, where July 10, we will dance under the stars to Gone Blonde with a playlist you'll love! Get out your grass skirts, Tommy Bahama shirts and colorful leis, because it's a Hawaiian Luau theme. With Cathie Perry, guitarist Andy Ross and drummer Marlon Figueroa on vocals, Gone Blonde performs a wide mix of rock, pop and dance hits you won't want to miss. Phil on bass and Eric on keyboard complete the five-piece band. We also have a great band lined up for the other two dances of the summer in the Lanai. Boogie Express has been booked for the Aug. 8 dance, which will have a Summer Nights theme. So, wear your coolest duds because the band will be smokin'. Then on Sept. 18, we're in the Lanai for the last time this season, for a return of the popular Buckleys. This will be the annual popular Western-themed party. On the dance f loor, we can look forward to jeans, cowboy hats and maybe even rhinestones? Moving into fall, Doo Wop was lucky to reserve Abravanel Hall for the date of the actual Halloween holiday, Oct. 31! Ghosts and goblins will dance to the music of another great live band. It's never too early to begin planning for the election party with free pizza, wine and beer in early November. We'll let you know later when a specific date is chosen, but in the meantime, begin thinking about running for the Doo Wop Board — it's a great experience! There's still time to sign up for the July 10 party. Just drop off your checks at the Clubhouse – the earlier the better. Members, $19, guests, $24. Check-in is at 5:30 pm and the band plays from 6 to 9 pm. BYOE. See you on the dance f loor. Written by Tom Harwood, Doo Wop President Doo Wop If you attend Line Dance Club classes, you know we dance to a wide variety of music, not just country. While country music is certainly part of line dancing, our instructor, Christine, selects music and choreography from many genres and offers dances for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced intermediate. If you're looking for our dances or additional dances to enjoy outside of class, YouTube can be overwhelming. A great alternative is CopperKnob (copperknob.co.uk), a website dedicated to line dancing. On CopperKnob, you can browse hundreds of dances choreographed to popular songs (you can register for free, but you don't need to register). A good place to start is the Most Popular Top 10 list. Click on a dance to view the step sheet and watch demonstration videos. Since dances are done by various choreographers, the videos may not look exactly like what we do in class, but they're still fun to watch and learn from. Here are a few dances from our classes that you can find on CopperKnob. Simply enter the song title and choreographer's name in the search bar: • Level 1: Calendar Girl AB — choreographed by Debbie Dickie • Level 2: Drink Champagne — choreographed by Maddison Glover • Levels 2–3: Choosin' Texas — choreographed by Nidhi Risi • Level 3. Role Model — choreographed by Maddison Glover Watching videos on Copperknob is one way to become familiar with the variety of dances done in the classes – so is coming to the classes to observe! Any OHCC resident is welcome to come watch any level of class to see if it fits your interest or if you are ready to move into a more advanced class. Class Schedule & Fees (Abravanel Hall): • Level 1: Tuesday, 10:30–11:30 am, $5 • Level 2: Monday, 12:30–2 pm, $7 • Level 3: Tuesday, 12–1:30 pm, $10 New participants are always welcome! You're invited to attend up to two classes (with the class fee) before deciding to join the club. Annual membership is $10.
