| OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2026 | 39 Should we or shouldn't we wait for all players to have received their passes before we look at tiles passed? What does your group do? In my regular group we don't wait for all to have passed tiles to look before we pick up and look at the tiles passed to us. In some of the online Mah- Jongg chat groups this has been a recent popular topic. It seems to me to be split by about 50/50 on what groups do. Some commented that they think it is rude to look before everyone receives their pass, however in an effort to keep the game moving I was taught to decide about passed tiles as soon as they are received. Once you give it, you can receive was the motto I learned and is my philosophy. No rules exist to say what is proper. We are busy finalizing the details of the Aug. 8, full day tournament. In polling our club, I learned that approximately 25 percent of those that replied don't like playing in tournaments and have opted out of this event. I was surprised by that number and as a club we aim to please the needs of all of our membership, and our Oct. 5 events aim to do just that. It's a member appreciation free event. It's a BYOEE- Bring Your Own Everything Except! Bring your own set, table mates, table cover, money if you play with it, decor- the exception is we will be providing Margaritas, chips and dips. If you need players to participate with, you can sign up as an individual, pair, or trio and we will do our best to complete tables. Sign up open on Sept. 1. Once again, July lessons were full with a waitlist too. The next sessions are in October; please sign up at the front desk of the Clubhouse if you're interested. They run four Saturdays in a row and are led by Dawn Edwards; our Education Director and she is assisted by her wonderful volunteer table coaches. Remember the club sponsors four weekly drop-ins per week; visit our website for more details. Question of the Month for last month: if you call for a tile you must be able to rack on flat part your exposure before doing any joker exchanges. What guidelines do you use when you stop the Charleston? Please discuss it with your group. Please note, pictured in last month's article was Christi and some of the Thursday night drop in group, she provides little ducks for the winner of each game! Written by Jacqueline Ettinger Mahjongg Club Bingo Bingo fans, it has been several months since I have written my usual article for Ocean Hills Living. Quite a bit has happened. The Village Voice published a lovely article about my activity within our community. The new Bingo equipment was purchased and installed in May. The Bingo Board of Directors was honored to have The Ocean Hills Journalism Board of Directors attend the dedication of the new Bingo equipment in June. Very simply, The Ocean Hills Journalism Club is the non-profit that runs the Village Voice. Selma Leighton and John Lesser, along with the Village Voice BOD honored the entire Ocean Hills community with the donation that allowed Bingo to purchase our new equipment. Bingo is played monthly and is open to the entire community. There are no yearly dues for Bingo, unlike other clubs. All you need is $10 cash to purchase a Bingo card, it's that easy. Plan on arriving early, because on average 230 residents and friends play each month. Never played Bingo? Nno problem, we will teach you. Just let one of our cashiers know you want a lesson or email us to let us know in advance you want to learn how to play. I want to segway this article into a question – How long have you been playing Bingo? How did you hear about Bingo? Do you have funny stories about your Bingo experiences? Did you learn about Bingo when you attended a Newbies event or at Do Dues Day held each January? Each month it is sometimes difficult to decide what to write about. There is only so much one can write about Bingo. Please email me with your stories along with your contact information. I may decide to highlight you in my next article or include your story in an article. I missed the last Ocean Hills Living article because I was on vacation in South Africa and Zimbabwe. A wonderful and amazing journey. The culture and people are so lovely, warm, giving and proud. The Africa I saw has many sides. Breathtaking vistas, spectacular animals, and amazing sunsets to say the least. I also met many wonderful people who work very hard each day to make their country even better. A vacation I will never forget. We look forward to seeing you at Bingo – Adele Siesel and the Bingo BOD, Adelesiesel2@gmail.com. For more information visit: https://ohccbingo.wixsite.com/ohcc- bingo
