Important Information On Dog Bites: This morning I was made aware that friends of mine have twice encountered a vicious dog attempting to attack their ankles while walking on Leisure Village Way. The husband said something to the man walking his dog. They do not know who this man is and if they see him again, they will be taking a picture of him. I am aware of someone that was bitten by a dog while walking at the Buena Vista Duck Pond. The owner of the dog did not provide information on the dog's vaccination records. Here is what I found about owner's responsibility if their dog bites someone: • In OHCC, please report the incident to Community Patrol with as much information you can provide about the attack. • For dog owners, keep your dogs on a tight six-foot leash. • Make sure you have control of your dog, are aware of your surroundings and always have your dog in control. • If the dog is aggressive, DO NOT WALK THEM around residents. Dog Bites Are e Owner's Responsibility • Mandatory Bite Reporting: According to San Diego County Code 62.615, dog owners, victims, and treating physicians are legally required to report any dog bite incident to the County Department of Animal Services. • Mandatory 10-Day Quarantine: Any dog that bites a human must be quarantined for exactly 10 days from the date of the bite to monitor for rabies. This is mandatory even if the dog is fully vaccinated. Animal Services may allow the quarantine to take place at the owner's home if a secure enclosure is available. Failing to keep the dog isolated during this window is a misdemeanor. • If a dog bites you then you should ask for all the owner's details and physical proof of vaccination for rabies. Animal control finds that owners often will not give this information. • Medicare assumes the dog owner is responsible for any bills for medical attention which may be why owners do not want to share that. • Modern day rabies vaccinations are not painful. The serum shot at the bite site are the worst part, but not at all bad and the shots are similar to any other vaccine. Only certain places carry the shots, and it seems the patient has to find out where. Written by Ellen Kippel and Karen Hasting | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2026 | 33 Pet Lovers Club
