FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2026 11 By Regina Farmer August is the perfect time to squeeze in one last great adventure before summer fades into fall. The days are still warm, the road is calling, and there is no better excuse to pack a bag, fill the tank, and explore the USA in your Chevrolet, or whatever car gets you there. Start in New England, where August brings some of the best whale watching in the country. Along the Gulf of Maine and Stellwagen Bank, humpback whales often put on a show — breaching, tail-slapping, and feeding close enough to make the whole trip unforgettable. And while you are up that way, you might as well follow your nose to Maine. August means lobster season is in full swing, and Rockland's Maine Lobster Festival makes the most of it. It is the perfect time to enjoy sweet, tender, soft-shell lobster and a taste of classic coastal summer. From there, point the car toward Washington, D.C., for a quieter kind of beauty. At Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, summer fills the wetlands with pink, white, and yellow lotus blooms. Walk the boardwalks, listen to the sounds along the Anacostia River, and take in a peaceful stop that feels worlds away from the city. Then head west to Crow Agency, Montana, for the Crow Fair Pow Wow and All Indian Rodeo, one of the largest Native American gatherings in the United States. Each August, the area comes alive with thousands of tipis, traditional drumming, dancing, storytelling, handcrafted regalia, and the heart-pounding excitement of Indian relay races. If you are ready for something truly wild, keep rolling to Bracken Cave near San Antonio, Texas. As the sun sets, 15 to 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats pour into the evening sky, turning pest control into one of nature's most dramatic performances. Finally, bring the adventure back to sunny California with a stop in Napa Valley. During harvest season, some wineries invite guests to pick grapes, learn how wine is made, and even try grape stomping — just like Lucy. So, this August, do not let summer slip away quietly. Chase whales, crack lobster, wander through lotus blooms, celebrate culture, watch bats take flight, and stomp a few grapes along the way. The road is waiting — make some unforgettable memories! Happy Trails to you! Why do it in August? Why do it in August? Why do it in August? Why do it in August? Why do it in August? Why do it in August?
