18 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | AUGUST 2026 | July this year was especially memorable as our nation celebrated 250 years of Freedom & Independence. In fact, it was SO memorable I got completely lost in the details of where it all began back in 1776! Not necessarily a history buff, I am awestruck by some of the f lags I see f lying about; the images of men relentlessly fighting in our battles for freedom. Our proud American Eagle silhouetted against Old Glory, and of course the iconic photograph, taken in1945, of six Marines raising a U.S. f lag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II moves me to tears. I often quote that a picture can be worth far more than 1,000 words and this one speaks volumes. Inspiring the sculpture, (in a single weekend) of the Marine Corps War Memorial, dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775, it goes far beyond dedication and passion. It exemplifies unspeakable gratitude. "Thank you, Felix de Weldon & Horace Peaslee." (Sculptor & Architect.) A close-knit group of Quilters may never become famous, but we are certainly not without gratitude, inspiration and very fond memories of spending quality time together sewing what moves us. Pat Spurgeon's Friends Squared quilt (above, center) was created with a group of friends who all contributed a square, illustrating that friends quilting together are everything but square! Diane's Diamonds & Squares (above, right) not only placed for a Ribbon at a local Quilt Show, but makes one think of Pi squared, or is that PII? (Personally Identifiable Information.) Oh, these modern day acronyms confuse me … perhaps it was easier to exist in 1776 when people spoke in words, not letters! One of our members, Henrietta Dorner traveled back to Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington DC over the Fourth of July holiday and snapped this picture (above, left), with the caption: "Look at the Quilt Designs between the windows." Once a Quilter, always a Quilter! Now THAT'S inspirational thinking! Seasons Quilters meets every Thursday in the Arts & Crafts Room from 10 am – 4 pm breaking for lunch at the Bistro at 12:30 pm. In August we meet on the 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th. Feel free to stop by the Craft Room and see what's sewing!
