| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2026 | 43 Golf Club As Summer fades into fall in Oceanside our weather is perfect for golf at OHCC! This month we are featuring the heroes of our golf club, the "Starters" who keep us on time, in a good mood with loads of encouragement even when they have to say the dreaded "No money for you this week." Without them we can't play so we are grateful for their hours of volunteer time to our club! At our recent Ocean Hills meeting, tournament director Debbie Machnick highlighted the different starters for our tournaments for ladies' day and Mixer Monday and Men's Day was led by Todd Albiston. The starters were given a free round of golf and certificate for their help that included Alan Colson, John Drace, Mike Brady, Randi Royter, Bob Bechill and Frank Cannon. For Mixer Monday and Tuesday Golf Todd recognized Steve Malone, Ron Carso, Joan McAlister, Janet Congel, Alan Goodman, Allen Cox, Mark Johnson, Wayne Carlson, Wayne Disch, Ted Mitchell and Tony Gillett. Guys and Dolls thanks Rich and Kit Dameron, Mike Ackerman & Terry Chamberlin. Flinger starters would be Tom Murphy, Don Quigley, Jon Matsumoto and Len Ambrosini. Niners are Mike Bell. Attached are several pictures of our many starters, we tried to get as many as possible in the photo so some are missing. Here is the origin of Starters. Role and Evolution: • First Tee Management: The starter evolved alongside organized golf clubs in Scotland and Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries to maintain pace of play and verify starting orders. • Multifunctional Duties: Beyond checking reservations, starters historically function as greeters, arbiters of player pairing, and local guides for course rules as well as tournament instructions. We've had our TA at El Camino see OHGC.net for results and our Guys and Dolls Tournament on Aug. 15. Congrats to all our winners. Looks as though we are ending TA with the Welks on Oct. 12 after 40 years of play. We continue to need more volunteers with our ever-growing club. Fingers crossed we will play the back 9 soon! I think we're all ready for more challenging golf with extended play into fall. Written by Teresa Deutman Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Starters Fling starters and more weekday starters Guys and Dolls starters The Table Tennis (aka Ping Pong) club at OHCC is open for play almost every day of the week. On weekdays, the default location for play is the Mykonos Room, and for weekends it moves to Abravanel Hall. Tables are typically set up for play on Mondays from 11 am to 2:30 pm, Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 am, and all other days from 1 to 8 pm. Members should check the updated weekly time schedules emailed monthly, posted on the bulletin board in Mykonos, or displayed on the Clubhouse activities marquee screen, as schedule changes occasionally occur based on room availability. The club offers members professional lessons to learn proper form and positioning to reduce the chances of falling or injury while improving overall playing ability. A buddy system allows players to book times to practice with more experienced players. Paid individual and group lessons with professional coaches can be booked in 30-minute slots from 3:30 to 5:30 pm on most Sundays. Sign-up sheets for both practice buddies and pro coaches are located on the bulletin board in the Mykonos Room. Written by Babu Patrose Table Tennis
