| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2026 | 11 AV Committee: Short Throw What? A couple of months ago OHSPA announced their generous donation of a Hisense PX3-PRO Ultra Short Throw Triple Laser Projector to OHCC. Their article in OHCC Living included a photo of it arriving in its carton. Drum roll… the Short Throw is now installed in AB Hall and undergoing testing by an excited audiovisual crew! Staff AV Technician Dario Gonzalez oversees the setup, system integration, and troubleshooting. Projectors on Stage: What it Means Live theatre is changing fast. For a long time, stage designers used heavy, painted wood or canvas to create sets and backdrops. Today, they use light, and projectors are a major tool for stage backgrounds. The short throw projector is a true game-changer for live shows. It uses special lenses to create a massive picture from a mere few feet or inches away. The ultra series can even sit directly under or above a screen or curtain. With OHSPA's donation, OHCC is now fortunate to have two short throw projectors that together can fill the entire stage with color or scenery or video. Performers love short throws because they are no longer blinded by bright projector light aimed from afar. Audiences love them because there are no more distracting shadows cast across the backdrop. Stage hands love their compact size. AV tech crews are wowed by their versatility. With the push of a button, a brick wall can turn into a rain forest; a galloping dinosaur dissolves into a living room; the rolling ocean changes to the Grand Canyon. The possibilities are endless and allow for dozens of scene changes without pausing the show while heavy sets are moved. Short throw projectors allow community theatres such as OHCC's to have Broadway-quality visuals on a budget. By blending the digital world with live performers, these tools can help the audience stay fully immersed without equipment distractions, leaving only the magic of make-believe to pull you in.
