Racquet Club The back-and-forth at the pickleball courts these days is intensifying as September comes to a close. Players are perfecting their third-shot drops and focused on "getting to the line" to turn their games into dinking battles. The banter between players (soon- to-be competitors) is clearly livelier than normal. Dozens of players are getting ready for the Oct. 2 Mixed Doubles Tournament – some are definitely out to win it, or edge out a friendly rival; others are just hoping to have a good time and win a game or two. Only Racquet Club members compete, but spectators are welcome throughout the day. Competition starts about 9 am at the Clubhouse and Pavilion courts and wraps up around 2 pm with championship finals for three divisions of play. Mark your calendar to drop by. Tournament Chair John Gildner oversees the leadership team: Competition Director Brett Anderson, Communications Chair Christi O'Connor, Social Director Marla Reiter, and Assistant Tournament Director, Scott Widdes. Finals take place at the Pavilion on court 6, rebranded for each pickleball tournament as "Livsey Championship Court" to honor the hard work and dedication of longtime residents Gerry and Herb Livsey. They've been at the forefront of OHCC pickleball since its inception here, providing free instruction to hundreds upon hundreds of residents. These two former educators and coaches whose academic careers ended long ago are still teaching pickleball. Coach Herb, who retired this summer as a scout for the Denver Nuggets, turned 90 in August. A few days later he was back on the court – our pickleball courts, that is – welcoming 25 players to a new class he developed focused on "footwork and paddle direction." Gerry is out there as well, to no one's surprise, accompanied by a loyal team of volunteer instructors. Our fourth annual "month of cornhole" was off to a good start as this article went to press. Ten teams were competing for bragging rights in the round robin team cornhole competition. The two- time champs (Ed Congel, Patrick Esquibel, Greg Gamble, and Alex Martinez) are the team to beat. We'll report the results in the next issue. And once again, a reminder to those who book pickleball reservations.
