The Gershwins long ago foresaw mountains tumbling and Gibraltar crumbling. Now, joining "our love," El Niño is here to stay. Until next spring anyway, if the Weather Channel has anything to say about it. And what, pray tell, has all this gloom and doom prognosticating got to do with our ever-sunny Sun Lakes? It's a fact that drought is the only natural disaster we can enjoy while it happens. And boy have we been having fun in the warm California sun. Just maybe, some of that fun will be taken indoors come November. And, it's possible we'll be playing on wet courts more in the next six months than we have experienced in awhile. Many of our hardy members don't let a heavy mist, a light sprinkle or even a shower keep them away from the Pickleball Pavilion. And, thanks to good drainage on the courts, even a downpour can be swept away with our handy squeegees and brief sun. Each year we should extend gratitude to the regulars who take initiative to prep the area before morning play. Even during wet weeks we can usually use two or three courts. Everyone should remain cautious though. Water can collect on the south end nearest Sun Lakes Boulevard. Some days it's best to avoid those four courts. Decent traction is a must rain or shine so fall/winter are good seasons to visit your favorite outlet for the latest shoe styles. A final note: You will find the most slippery parts of the concourse are the lines. The paint is slick and you may find your shoes slide a bit. Your scribe has seen a lot of weather out there and never seen players falling due to moisture. There are plenty of other culprits such as backpedaling, wearing shoes not designed for our game, or simply overestimating our abilities in the heat of the moment. So even if El Niño does his worst, Sun Lakes offers some of the best conditions available to get outside and play. See you on the courts!
