From Courtney Taylor, Publisher: I recently went to a concert and nearly everyone there was younger than me. That wasn't the case at the last concert I went to (Tom Jones (who I highly recommend)). Anyway, this concert was LOUD. I plugged my ears during most songs. So I'm at this concert and need a break from the loudness and decided, sure, I need to go to the bathroom. There was a line and all the women were in their 20s. I was behind a blonde girl and she watched another girl walk by and said, "I LOVE your BOOTS!" which made the other girl chirp, "Thanks!" A few seconds later, another girl walked out and the blonde said, "CUTE dresssss!" to which the other girl replied, "TILLY'S!" and gave a peace sign. This blonde girl was passing out compliments like they were candy. On my way out, I walked past the girls in line and another girl said to someone else in line, "You look SOOOO cute!" and the girl smiled the biggest smile. I thought, "What the heck is going on here?" Spending time online and on social media, I thought everyone was mad at each other. Reading comments on posts, I thought everyone was mean. But these girls opened a door into what might be going on offline. Maybe people are trying to make other people feel good about themselves. Wouldn't that be a wonderful trend? Especially if it spilled over into the internet swamp. Then what? We see the best in each other and overlook differences? When I was thinking about what this all could mean to the world, I came across a quote that I'll paraphrase: "When you're happy, there's no need to be mean or negative to others. How you treat people is a direct reflection of how life is treating you. The happiest people you know aren't trying to make others feel small. They don't insult others to feel important. They don't need to win every argument. When you're at peace with yourself, you don't want to tear someone else down. When someone is constantly cruel, it says more about their inner world than the person they're attacking. Not every mean person is miserable, but you shouldn't tolerate bad behavior. Real happiness is becoming someone who others feel good to be around. Protect your happiness from those who threaten it and be the person who makes others feel happy about themselves … and then they spread that to the next person." And if you decide to share a random compliment with a stranger at a loud concert, be sure to SHOUT it. | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2026 | 75 Seems a bit extreme.
