You may have noticed a quiet treasure tucked away at its highest point. A single bench rests there, almost hidden, offering a peaceful escape for anyone seeking a moment of stillness. From this spot, the view stretches across the back side of the Altis neighborhood and out toward the mountains, which seem to rise just for you. This bench holds more than a beautiful view it holds a memory. It was placed in honor of Michael McCormick, a tribute to a life remembered in a place meant for ref lection, comfort, and calm. Michael was born on Friday, September 13, 1991. From the very beginning, he was full of energy, determination, and a spirit of adventure. As a child, he loved riding BMX, soccer, art, motorcycles, and anything that challenged him. At just 12 years old, he declared that he wanted to become a professional paintball player. Through dedication and perseverance, he achieved that dream and went on to play professionally for San Diego Dynasty. In January 2020, Michael courageously shared with his family that he was addicted to fentanyl. Like so many families' facing addiction, they didn't know where to turn. With the support of his girlfriend, Michael entered treatment through Riverside University Health System's SU-CARES program. Michael fought hard for his recovery. He celebrated seven and a half months of sobriety while working two jobs, purchasing a truck, making plans for the future, and rebuilding his life. During that time, one of his most remarkable qualities shined through — his generosity. He freely shared his clothing, toiletries, food, cigarettes, and whatever else he had with others in recovery who were struggling. Tragically, after a relapse, Michael lost his battle with addiction. Although his loss has been devastating, his life left an enduring message: addiction is not a choice. It is a disease that affects individuals and families from every background and every community. To honor Michael's life and legacy, the McCormick family established the Michael McCormick Foundation. The foundation supports individuals in recovery, provides fentanyl awareness education, and works to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction. Michael's mother, Lorie, now speaks at local high schools, sharing his story to educate students about the dangers of fentanyl and the realities of addiction. Each year, the foundation provides Christmas care packages to the recovery centers Michael attended, celebrates residents' birthdays on Michael's birthday, and offers financial assistance to help individuals remain in sober living as they continue their recovery journey. The Terramor community has become an important partner in supporting Michael's mission through annual events such as the Fall Fashion Show and community garage sales. Every care package, every donation, and every life touched ref lects the foundation's belief that recovery is possible and that no one should have to face addiction alone. Michael's legacy lives on through compassion, hope, and service to others. His story continues to inspire families, educate communities, and remind those struggling with addiction that healing is possible and that every life has immeasurable value.
