Weather Report Why do we always begin with a weather report? It is a pleasant, neutral topic that we all experience and enjoy discussing. As the saying goes, everyone talks about the weather, but no one can do anything about it. Normally, at this time of year, we would be enjoying our lovely fall weather and reminding ourselves how fortunate we are to live here. We are still very lucky — but what is going on with the weather? We experienced record- high temperatures through most of October. I hope a cooling period arrives soon; my air conditioner needs a rest. OHCC Master Board The new Board members are already deeply involved, bringing fresh ideas and energy. I remember arriving on the Board with that same enthusiasm. Since then, I have learned that helping to steer the ship called OHCC is a gradual process. With my sailing experience, I once thought it would be easy to point the organization in a new direction and set off. Now, I sometimes think of it as a concrete boat without a rudder: you turn the helm and expect a response, but movement comes much more slowly than anticipated. OHCC is a large organization, and meaningful change takes time. If nothing else, the experience teaches me patience, collaboration, and a realistic sense of what we can accomplish together. Old Business Lake and golf course: The lake is nearly full, and seeding and sodding around it remain in progress. We have hired an experienced lake-management company to address the ongoing needs of a lake this size. The back nine of the golf course has finally reopened, a welcome development for golfers. Its reopening will also give the front nine more time to heal and recover from overuse. Project review: In cooperation with the Technology Oversight Committee (TOC), the Board will prepare a report for the membership explaining what occurred during the golf course and lake projects and what we learned from them. A written record will help ensure that future projects benefit from those lessons. Because the report covers many years of work, it will take time to complete. We appreciate your patience as we move forward. Work-order system: The system has been updated, with additional improvements planned for the coming months. Improving it was one of my highest priorities when I was elected. New Business Transparency and community involvement were among my priorities when I joined the Master Board. I hope in the future we can hold a few town hall meetings. One meeting I think could invite residents to share their vision for future OHCC projects; another could provide an open forum for any issues or ideas residents wish to bring before the Board. For example, after parking beneath a large array of solar panels at the local Walmart, I began thinking about OHCC's significant electricity expenses. Since installing solar panels on my own roof, I have reduced my electricity costs to almost nothing. Is solar energy a project the community would like us to explore? Other priorities might include new or improved recreational equipment — or ideas we have not yet considered. Your input can help shape the conversation. What Makes OHCC Special I want to state how wonderful our community is and how difficult it would be to imagine a more perfect place to live. We look out for our neighbors, stop to talk in the street, and make time to connect. These social bonds make OHCC special and contribute to a remarkably healthy place to call home. As the holiday seasons are approaching I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy the season.
