Hiking Club Hikers enjoy the camaraderie and safety of being in a group. There are some hikes that it is difficult to organize a group to make. One such hike is at the top of nearby Mount San Jacinto. The adventure begins West of Palm Springs in Chino Canyon near where a tram takes passengers from 2,643 foot Valley Station to the Mountain Station to the 8,516 foot upper tramway terminal at the edge of the wilderness. The tram floor makes 2 1/2 revolutions during the ride and hiccups under the tram towers giving riders a momentary "lift." The mountain hiking is under the administration of both the California State Park system on the north side and the National Park System on the south side. While some of the trails are temporarily closed due to this summer's fires and floods, the most popular trail around the rim is open. From the five lookout positions hikers (on a clear day) can see the Salton Sea as well as much of the Coachella valley. It is a well-maintained trail and day hikers pushing baby strollers are a common sight. Park rangers say that November is the most popular months for visitors who want their first glimpse of snow while not having to live in it. ~Leonard Tavernetti Photos from our recent hike. The Meier's are in Oregon, the Bentley's are in San Diego, and Charlie and I left Aug. 10, for a three-month trip heading toward Bar Harbor, Maine and meeting a caravan for a Grand East Coast Tour. We need to give a big RV "shout out" to Larry and Natalie Zimmerman who came to see what our club is all about. We hope you liked what you saw and join the club.
