Racquet Club Welcome to new club members Don Cornwell and Shao Jia. Glad to have you join us! New in August is our in-house mixed doubles league. Thanks to Barbara Miller who is organizing our play. At the time of writing we have not yet started, but we will be playing on the second and third Thursdays of each month, with a different partner for each match to keep it interesting. To prompt our competitive instincts, points will be tallied and league winners announced at the conclusion. Watch for more as the league continues. Members have been busy with USTA league play as well. Larry Martin and Randy Fedorchuk have been playing against each other on USTA 3.5 teams for a few seasons now, Larry at Pacific High School, San Bernardino and Randy at Andulka Park Tennis Club in Riverside. Randy's team advanced to sectionals in Costa Mesa this August after coming first in the league. This summer, Randy, Larry and Irve Sturner played in a 55-plus 8.0 league for the team at Andulka Park, which came in first. Larry and Irve are also playing in a trilevel 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 league. Busy! Randy and Jo Fedorchuk have been to their second Pasadena Senior Games this June, and had a fun, although hot, weekend, winning gold individually in 55-plus singles and bronze together in 55-plus mixed doubles. The Senior Games is a great way to meet and play other people of our vintage instead of the 30-somethings who chase every ball down and frustrate us 'seniors'! San Diego is hosting games in September, and it would be fun to see more of our members join in. Howard and Mickey Nelson are planning on going, as are Randy and Jo. Information is available on-line at www.sdseniorgames.org if you would like to come too. Remember that every week, two of our members volunteer to help players improve. Irve Sturner will hit with club members who would like extra practice, after he has played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, around 11 am. Randy Fedorchuk holds an instructional clinic for anyone at Four Seasons who is interested, followed by fun doubles on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.; emails are sent ahead of time advising of the theme for the clinic. Come on out and hit! Please visit our club's website www.fsbrc.org for all the up-todate news. a reluctant 'senior' and your scribe ~Jo Fedorchuk Paddle Ball 1. Laughing (a lot of it; from one to two hours at each session) 2. Exercise (from mild to moderate – your choice; there are a couple of players that go beyond moderate) 3. Comraderie (goodwill and lighthearted rapport between and among friends) The game is very easy to learn (30 to 38 60 seconds — it takes a little longer to master). Most who pick up a paddle for the first time and play a few games are hooked! It is just a fun game to play and the people you play with make it even more fun.
