Racquet Club Our U.S. Open play day in August had one thing missing — the U.S. Open! Nevertheless, it was a successful morning — about 16 of us took part. There was lots of catching up amongst those who were waiting to go back on the court to play, and many times 'great shot' was heard — we are too polite to say 'you hit it long again!' After all this play we were hungry for our traditional American lunch of hot dogs, coleslaw, chips, beans and apple turnovers. Smitty's catered the main course, and the club provided the desserts and drinks. Because of the dispute between Time Warner and CBS, we couldn't watch the action, but no one minded too much. We had an impressive lineup of raffle prizes — Smitty's gift cards, one of Jo Fedorchuk' s tennis garden flags, an Entertainment book donated by Ken Elliott, Barbara Miller donated some of her quilted cards, business cards that Irve Sturner will make to order, and Arlene Malkin donated a fall decoration made from the pinewood she collects in Arizona. Thanks to all who helped with the event! And don't forget the Racquet Club Annual Banquet on Oct. 15, at 6 pm. The Thursday mixed doubles league is in full swing; there are 12 men and 12 women participating. Three time slots are needed to get all the matches played, and the plan is to keep this going for six months, on the second and third Thursday of each month. How easy will it be to hold play days and our mixed doubles league when we have more courts built! Not to mention hosting larger events with other clubs near us, and having our own USTA league teams. Whenever we are at the Sales Center we need to encourage KHOV to follow through and build them, for the community as a whole. It enriches our lives to be able to play and the amenities need to keep up with the growth as Four Seasons expands. Right now, some of our members go to public courts when ours are full. To play in USTA leagues some of our male members are going to Riverside and Upland. Some of the women have joined teams in the desert, and Sun Lakes has graciously made room for us on some of their league teams — we do appreciate that! In addition, many of us living here enjoy the hospitality of playing social tennis at Sun Lakes and we cannot reciprocate because of our lack of courts. We need to keep this issue front and center! ~Jo Fedorchuk Pickleball Please join us on the courts every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9 am for open play.
