Toastmasters Interest Group Due to our new schedule of meeting the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, there is an important announcement. There will NOT be a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 27, due to it being the evening before Thanksgiving and the first night of the Celebration of the Festival of Lights, aka, Hanukkah. My reasoning is that there will be business going on in many kitchens, others going on vacation, and/ or visiting with family. Now, back to business… thank you to everyone who joined us for our very first open house specializing in Special Occasion speeches and let's not forget the pizza! It was a success and we owe it to you, our residents. I am hoping as we do more of these, the attendance grows even more. Now what I need to ask is, what subjects would you be interested in our speaking about? Please send me an email with your suggestions! We want to give you what YOU want to hear. It may even interest you in learning how to give speeches like the ones you are hearing. Another benefit of Toastmasters, for those interested, is for individuals who are missing the dynamics of being part of the workforce. Many of you held sales, management ownership positions and more. Now, in retirement, you might be missing the leadership or challenging roles you previously held. Some of you may have joined other Four Seasons' or clubs and committees, trying to recapture the feeling of success and benefitting your community. Toastmasters can also help you regain those feelings. In addition to our bi-monthly meetings, there are Divisional contests you can choose to enter (they are not mandatory). If you win you go on further, getting more and more recognition. (Being a member for only two months, I entered a contest and I was shocked to win third place against other seasoned Toastmasters.). In addition, the longer you are in Toastmasters, you can become a Divisional leader, of which there are many levels. I am currently Club President, a position I will retire from next April 2014. Growing within the organization is not for everyone, but I have a feeling it is right for several of our residents. Even if we are not having a formal "open house," you are invited to attend any of our meetings to check us out. Come on over, sit with us for an hour and see what our club is all about. We look forward to meeting you. I promise, we will NOT pressure you to join. The decision is totally yours. Until we meet… ~ Teri Meyers-Kelman Counter Culture Cinema We've got two interesting films lined up for November. We invite you to join us for the screenings, with stimulating discussion afterwards. Our first November screening, on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 6 pm is the documentary "Greedy Lying Bastards" (USA 2012, 90 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from Internet Movie Database: "Melting sea ice, glacier loss and rising sea levels. Severe droughts and wildfires. Increasingly severe tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding. Record heat waves. Climate change is no longer a prediction for the future, but a startling reality of today. Yet, as evidence of our changing climate mounts and the scientific consensus proves human causation, there continues to be little political action to thwart the warming of our planet. 'Greedy Lying Bastards' investigates the reason behind stalled efforts to tackle climate change despite consensus in the scientific community that it is not only a reality but also a growing problem placing us on the brink of disaster." Our second November screening, on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 6 pm, is "Barbara" (Germany 2012, 105 minutes, English subtitles). Here is a brief description from Amazon.com: "East Germany, 1980. Barbara Wolff is a young doctor who has applied for an exit visa from the GDR and, as punishment, has been transferred from her prestigious post in Berlin to a small pediatric hospital in the country. She must weigh her absolute dedication to her patients against a potential escape to the West, and her newfound attraction to a doctor in whom she sees a kindred spirit." The Lodge theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early. We hope to see you there!
