Discovery Club Bereavement Group This club focuses on Genealogy – doing family trees and researching family history. We are not professionals, but some of us have lots of experience and are happy to help those who are just starting. All you have to do is ask. Recently I spoke with a long-time friend who told me her mother was still going strong at 101 years of age. Being born in 1912, think of the history this lady has experienced, and the things she's seen and done. Amazing! And very unusual. We seldom have an alert elderly person in our family like this, so we must rely on resources at our disposal. The Internet is our most useful tool these days. While many of us use Ancestry.com, we can also use Google or other search engines. And we can visit places like the National Archives – about 35 miles from here in Perris – where research is free and the staff is helpful. Some basic rules for doing your family tree: Start with what you already know. Keep it simple. Apply the "does this make sense?" test. Go slow and be careful – it's not a race. Bigger is not better. Not everything you see on the Internet is true. If you would like to be notified of Discovery Club meetings or outings, please contact us. ~ Willis Fagan Our group began in October. The only difficulty was that no one showed up. The same warm and supportive environment that so greatly benefitted previous participants will be recreated in a new group. But first there has to be a group. Great sadness, bereavement, does not have to be about death. Humans experience grief about lots of things such as divorce, moving from a beloved neighborhood or house, changing jobs, and even retirement. Any kind of substantial change can cause distress and grief. If you want to talk about it where you will not be judged for your feelings, please come. No one will tell you that you're silly for feeling that way, no one will tell you that "you should be over it by now," no one will be embarrassed by your sadness and try to change the subject. You will discover that there's nothing wrong with you. You are just sad. And your presence will help others. That's the amazing thing about sharing: how much we all help each other. The group meets Mondays from 1 to 3 pm in the Crafts Room at the Lodge. We make the room private to increase intimacy and comfort. If you come and decide not to return it's okay. If you come and decide to participate, great. We would love to see you. Please sign up at the interest sheet at the Lodge, or call Laurie at (951) 922-0934 or e-mail at lauriemlarson425@gmail.com. Any contact is kept confidential. ~ Laurie Larson CLUBS & GROUPS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2013 35
