It's joyful and triumphant!" - The Grinch We're in the midst of the sales season where some businesses prepare for the end of the year, either for slow down or a big rush. No matter where you in your business, you have to keep forward momentum to propel you into the new year. A lot of businesses gear their holiday sales around November's Black Friday, Small Business Day Saturday and Cyber Monday. One, if not all of those days, help make or break the holiday sales season for them. Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it was the brain child of American Express in response to to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. It is reported that last year's Small Business Saturday events generated sales of $5.5 billion for small businesses around the country on that one day alone. Not only did it increase sales, it encouraged shoppers to engage with their local enterprises, often for the first time, which will have generated many repeat customers. What will you do to take advantage of Small Business Saturday? The idea is to encourage as many people as possible to patronize small, local and independent businesses, whether it's the local coffee shop, an online local retailer, a plumber, print shop or pet store around the corner. If everyone in Yucaipa who stayed for Thanksgiving attended the Winter Fest 2013 Celebration then shopped in town, the impact on local businesses would be incredible. This will be the third year that the Yucaipa Valley Chamber of Commerce has celebrated WinterFest, which includes businesses around town and home based businesses. The event provides an opportunity for business owners to sell their products in an iconic holiday atmosphere. The Yucaipa Valley Small Business and Home Based Business Growth and Development Committee is preparing for Small Business Saturday which will be held this year on Sat., Nov. 30. The City's Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is held in conjunction with WinterFest, which will be located on California Street and Yucaipa Boulevard. The streets will be lit up with festive holiday displays in anticipation for the annual visit with Santa. Several groups around the city will be involved in this event to help our small businesses promote Small Business Saturday and start the holiday season. This event will run from 3 to 8 pm and will have a variety of entertainment and local vendors. OUR YUCAIPA | NOVEMBER 2013 | CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (Continued on the next page)
