yiddish culture club We are in the busiest time of the year with the holidays this month and next. It seems the older we get the faster the years fly by. But in Sun Lakes, we don't let anything stop us. Some of us will escape to the malls and shop till we drop; some of us will turn on QVC, HSN, and Shop NBC with our smart phones or iPads or tablets in hand. I'll grab my check book, pen, envelopes, and stamps and take the easy way out so I have enough energy to enjoy all the doings in this holiday season! To kick off the season we have come to bat with a program that has run the race for documentaries released in 2013. Glickman, the triumphant story of Marty Glickman, one of the most revered sportscasters in history, will be shown at our meeting on Wed., Nov. 13, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Before Marv Albert and Bob Costas, there was Marty Glickman. An American athlete, of Jewish faith, he was robbed of his chance to run in the 1936 Olympics which were held in Germany. Glickman went on to become a pioneering sportscaster. He voiced newsreels, called thousands of games, and shaped sports programming for more than 50 years, setting the gold standard for sports broadcasters past, present and future. We are sure you will enjoy this program 22 | sun lakes lifestyles | november 2013 | which is part of our living history. Everyone is welcome to share this evening's entertainment with us. As always, refreshments will be served. There is no charge for members. Guests are $3 pp. Info., Diane 769-0130. Our second event for November is one of the most unusual events in history. In fact, this event is not scheduled to happen for another 70,000 years on our calendar! If you guessed that it is the first night of Chanukah falling on the night before Thanksgiving you are correct! So, our Chanukah Menorah Lighting ceremony will take place in front of the Main Clubhouse on Wed., Nov. 27, at 4:30 pm. Those who have been to this event previously know that it is very short and there will be a reception in the Multipurpose Room after the first light is lit for all who attend. We welcome anyone who would like to join us for this ceremony. It is something you don't want to miss – to be able to wish your friends a Happy and Healthy Chanukah and Thanksgiving all at the same time! So put a lid on your Thanksgiving cooking for a short time and come out for a bit that evening. Be sure to dress warmly and a happy, healthy November to all.
