A Year in Review Another year of great accomplishment for Beaumont For the city of Beaumont, the year 2013 was about planning for the future, creating a "green" community, honoring police and firefighters, and listening and responding to those we serve. Throughout the year, our dedicated public servants at the Beaumont Civic Center have worked diligently to create a brighter tomorrow for residents and businesses. In 2013, they tackled issues big and small as they worked to create a Beaumont for the future. "The people of Beaumont have always been visionaries," said Mayor Roger Berg. "From the time of our forefathers, the community has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for the next generation." Looking back Here are just some areas that highlight Beaumont's accomplishments this year: • Improved our roads • Supported a clean city and environment • Built a new city website • Cared for our pets • Encouraged ideas on improving the city • Dedicated a Public Safety Memorial Beaumont believes strongly in regional transportation and making improvements to get people where they're going and to keep the air clean and the skies blue. During the year, the city started Commuter Link 120, a new bus line that quickly takes veterans to the VA in Loma Linda. The same bus line allows commuters to catch a Metrolink train in San Bernardino for jobs in Pasadena and Los Angeles. So far, more than 1,200 passengers have taken Commuter Link 120 to reach destinations in the Inland Empire and throughout Southern California. 8 BEAUMONT NOW | DECEMBER 2013 In the heart of downtown, a new intersection is taking shape and replacing an old five-way stop at 6th Street and California Avenue. Modern traffic lights will keep cars, trucks, and pedestrians flowing. CT Realty, which built the Dowling Orchard Business Park, is spending $500,000 on the new intersection project. Beaumont is also seeking grant money to enhance safety at Highway 60 and Western Knolls Avenue near an iconic fruit stand. The area is one of the most dangerous spots along Hwy. 60. The improvements would include street lighting and constructing special lanes at Western Knolls Avenue to help traffic get on and off Hwy. 60. The City of Beaumont is also seeking funding to help build an overpass and interchange project at the junction of Interstate 10/Highway 79/Hwy 60. These improvements will keep traffic flowing, open up land development and bring good-paying jobs. "Green" Beaumont Historically, Beaumont has shown its commitment to the environment. And community recycling events make it easy to be kind to Mother Earth. Each fall season, Beaumont holds its very popular annual Community Cleanup Day at Stewart Park. The free event takes documents for shredding, scrap metal, green waste, electronic equipment, bulky items, and tires. In 2013, nearly 36 tons of waste was collected — the equivalent of about 40 small cars. Finally, the Southern California Gas Co. has joined the Southern California Edison Co. in a highly successful local partnership with the city of Beaumont. By working together, we will be able to bring many new programs to residents and businesses that will conserve precious natural resources and lower utility bills.
