Neighborly Notes By Bobbie Eckel It is hard to believe that we are almost finished with 2013. Hold on to your hats; with all the activities planned, we will be spinning quickly through our final month of the year. Waste Management does not collect on Christmas Day or New Years' Day. However, since both of those holidays fall on a Wednesday, the normal Tuesday pick-up day will not be affected. Plan to have your bins out on Monday night or Tuesday morning. Waste Management does collect and recycle Christmas trees for the first two weeks following Christmas on your regular collection day. Trees taller than six feet must be cut in half. Remember to remove all decorations, including tinsel, ornaments, lights and tree stands. Flocked trees will be collected, but cannot be recycled. Lodge hours will change for the Christmas holiday and New Year' Day. The Lodge closes at 3 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 24, remains closed all day on Dec. 25, and re-opens at 9 am on Dec. 26. The Lodge will close at 4 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 31, but will reopen for the New Year's Gala Event for ticket holders prior to the Dinner Dance. The facility will be closed all day on Wednesday, Jan. 1 and will re-open with normal hours (7 am – 9 pm) on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. An important reminder to those residents who walk their pets early: As the temperatures drop during the winter months, there will be areas where the sprinklers have left water which will freeze on the sidewalk. Watch the surfaces carefully. Broken bones take a long time to heal. While you are thinking "winter," check to make sure that the water pipes which are exposed are wrapped. The local hardware stores stock foam pipe wrap. If you need to add wrapping, do it early while the foam wrap is plentiful. Do you remember the sinkhole which we reported in the May, 2013 issue of the Breeze? It was on the trail near the Lodge across from Potrero Gate entrance. There has recently been a flurry of activity with machinery and construction workers in that area. Community hikers had hoped that the trail was being repaired and would soon be open to residents. However, a check with Lisa Lynn, our General Manager, determined that to her knowledge there is no plan to open the trail to residents. The repairs being done are necessary for the basin retention area. Residents, you have another opportunity to purchase unique gifts for the holidays. Beaumont Senior Center is hosting a Craft Fair with gifts, ceramics, home decor, ornaments, jewelry and much more on Saturday, Dec.14, at the Beaumont Civic Center, 550 E. 6th Street in Beaumont. For more information, please call (951) 769-8524. Beaumont City's Holiday Light Parade will be held on Dec. 14 at 6 pm. The parade will extend from Palm Avenue to the Civic Center. The Beaumont Senior Services November and December Newsletter contains a warning for Southern California Edison customers. Apparently impostors are calling residents in the Inland region to ask for immediate payment for supposedly past-due bills. If you receive such a call, please notify the police or call Southern California Edison directly at (800)-655-4555. The November – December issue of Westways, the magazine for AAA Club members, has an interesting article on pets and your home's liability insurance. Those of us who have furry or feathered friends in residence need to be aware of our home insurance's policy on pet bites or scratches. Even friendly, exuberant animals can cause problems for an unsuspecting visitor. Murder Mystery Dinner The cast is busy learning their lines through the Holidays. Once 2014 arrives, serious rehearsals will begin. The scene will be set and the menu complete as the intrigue grows. No matter who in the cast you ask about the murderer, no one will tell you. It is still a secret and the final pages of the script haven't been given out yet! Stay tuned! ~ Barbara Wasco Thank You! Special thanks to Rob Kelman for photographing the Radio Theater Performance. Another big thank you to Bill Sanders, the Lodge Event photographer. Community News | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2013 9
