Beaumont uSD PrePareS StuDentS to Bring Your own Device to School In keeping with our mission to connect our schools with the home and community, and provide you with information about the 21st century learning skills employed by the Beaumont Unified School District, we are excited to announce we will implement the voluntary Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative. With this initiative, students are encouraged to bring their own technology devices to school to enrich their learning experiences. The reason for initiating the program is to move the students and staff forward in a rich technological learning environment because we recognize the power electronic tools has in supporting 21st century teaching and learning. The Device refers to privately owned wireless and/or portable electronic hand-held equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, existing and emerging mobile communication systems and smart technologies, portable Internet devices, hand-held entertainment systems, or portable information technology systems that can be used for word processing, wireless Internet access, image capture/recording, sound recording, and information transmitting/receiving/storing. The implementation of BYOD compliments the investment the District made in increasing the wireless infrastructure, thus allowing students and the teachers access to immediate technology integration in the classroom. Students benefit because the devices are personalized and are typically more robust and up-to-date than traditional school computer labs or laptops/mobile carts. As teachers strive to prepare students for their future, BYOD replicates a technology-rich environment that is already common in higher education and the workplace. The flexibility of personalized devices supports different learners with their unique needs, thus helping students to identify skills that will serve them life-long in their learning. With increased engagement and technological proficiency through BYOD, students have an advantage in the transition to Common Core State Standards and the performance-based assessments that will measure their learning. We invite you to follow the progress of the initiative and learn more about the details of the security and privacy considerations that accompany BYOD, by referring to the District website at beaumont-ca.schoolloop.com BEAUMONT NOW | JANUARY 2014 7
