Big Band Dance A New Orleans Mardi Gras (costume optional) is the theme of our March dinner dance, which will be on Thurs., March 6, in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Although Mardi Gras in New Orleans is officially March 4, "Fat Tuesday," we will just have our fun a few days later, Doors open at 5:30 pm and the music starts at 6 pm. I saw a movie on TMC featuring some of the oldies but goody Big Bands of the 40s and 50s, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and all the time I was listening I thought of our Big Band here in Sun Lakes. Same music, great sound, prompting a nostalgic reach back in into time challenging what you were doing when you first heard a particular piece of music. They play swing, waltz, fox trot, rock & roll, etc. If you haven't danced to the pure sound of our Big Band (15 pieces), you are missing out on a comprehensive all encompassing thrill to hear and dance to our band. The band members do solos intermittently including our chanteuse, Nannette, who belts out a tune every so often. Your experience is not only to dance but also to listen and be entertained. Singles warmly welcomed. Sign ups are on Tues., Feb. 25 from 1 to 3 pm with table reservation at 1:15 pm in Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. The price of the dinner dance is $25 pp (which includes a dance fee) for BBDC members and $30 pp for guests. Checks only please. The menu is a choice of corned beef and cabbage with boiled carrots or pasta primavera vinaigrette dressing. There is pre-set salad with ranch and raspberry vinaigrette dressings and Peach Crisp served dessert. Bring check to early sign up or mail or drop off at 1298 Green Island St. Info., Shelia Hammer, 845-0484 or Ted Grady, 845-0359. 2014 Schedule: May 1, July 24, Sept. 4, Nov. 6. Free Big Band Dance Club Concert on the Veranda on April 29, 1 to 3 pm. Everybody is welcome. Country Western Dance It's February, and we're all starting to look forward to the end of winter. We in the Country Western Dance Club try to get through the winter by keeping ourselves active with our dances and dance instruction. Curious about what we do? Feel free to come and monitor any of our events. The two February dances are on Feb. 7 and 21 in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom from 7 to 9 pm. Note that these will be on the first and third Fridays this month. Line dance instructions will be on Mon., Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 7 to 8:30 pm at the South Clubhouse. We currently are learning intermediate level dances. A totally new dance will be taught in February just to keep it interesting. Couples dance instruction will be at the South Clubhouse on Tues., Feb. 11, and 25, from 7 to 8 pm. We will teach basic waltz steps at both sessions. All couples are welcome to come to these sessions. For information about club functions, call Joe or Jean at 7699148. International Dancers Our Hawaiian group's fun and happy luncheon for our Hawaiian Kumu (certified teacher) Jill Young was on Dec. 20 in the dining room. At time to leave we were surprised when told our luncheon had been paid by a person who wished to remain anonymous. All 15 of us hope you read this and know how much we thank you and sincerely appreciate your kind and generous deed. Perhaps in the future we will know your identity and can thank you personally. New routines are learned monthly, practicing old ones and enjoying the exercise and camaraderie of a fun group of people. If you would like to be involved, please join us. Also check us out on Activities Day. Info., Joan Lau (Chinese), 769-3978; Nora (Flamenco), 8458333; Sussy (Folkloric), 797-3758; Sarah (Hawaiian), 7691164 or Diane, 769-0286. 80s Plus Club We enjoyed celebrating the holidays. Each year Ed Avina graces us with his caring show to bring us joy. Keeping up his tradition, Ed plays from the time he arrives until dinner is over. He plays favorites like "The Very Thought of You," and several festive songs to get us in a holiday mood. Thank you Ed for always being our December man. We meet the second Saturday at the South Clubhouse at 3 pm. Caregivers and spouses are welcome. Info., Barb, 845-7904 or Carol, 769-7382.
