Yiddish Culture Club
It's already February and our second
joyous month of 2014. We began the
year with a gala evening in the Ballroom
thanking those who have served our club
so well during the past year and welcoming
those who will serve this year. They say it
"takes a village to raise a child." We may not
be a village, and we're certainly not children,
but it does take many, many devoted
workers to keep a good club growing and
that we are!
This month our joyful journey continues
with "Hava Nagila (The Movie)." Directed
by Roberta Grossman and written by Sophie
Sartain this documentary, through the
unlikely prism of this song, tells the story of
cultural adaptation while providing a fresh
look at modern history, from poverty to
plenty, from a small village in the Ukraine to
the suburbs of America. "The filmmakers
mix the playful and serious and interesting

tidbits keep coming." (NY Times) "Making
an entire movie about a single song does
seem a stretch… but the attitude is so
much fun and the story so involving that
it is forgivable. What Grossman sets out to
do, wonderfully, is locate "Hava Nagila" in
cultures worldwide."
Harry Belafonte, who appears in the film,
was one of its bigger ambassadors as was
Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, and Bob
Dylan. Several musicologists, scholars and
"Hava Nagila" experts weigh in on the song's
significance to soul and culture, and there's
never a shortage of humor." (LI Newsday)
