Heart & Soul Line Dance Can you believe the first month of our new year is already gone? In addition to our regulars our first class of the new year came with some new dancers – welcome Judy, JoAnne, Laura, Terry, Pat, Ami, Barbara, Kathy (the Box Springs Trail group) and Dena, and we also saw some dancers we haven't seen for some time, welcome back Rhonda and Chin. Hope you will all join us again. The new year also came with new dances and spent the month reviewing them to ensure we all learned them. We also revisited a few dances we haven't done in a while. Hope it was as much fun for you as it was for me! Book Club Our February selection is The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker — a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia. Born in 1800, Henry's brilliant daughter, Alma (who inherits both her father's money and his mind), ultimately becomes a botanist of considerable gifts herself. As Alma's research takes her deeper into the mysteries of evolution, she falls in love with a man named Ambrose Pike who makes incomparable paintings of orchids and who draws her in the exact opposite direction — into the realm of the spiritual, the divine, and the magical. Alma is a clear-minded scientist; Ambrose a Utopian artist — but what unites this unlikely couple is a desperate need to understand the workings of this world and the mechanisms behind all life. Announcement Reminder: Saturday, Feb. 22, our Heart and Soul Line Dance Workshop from 1 to 5 pm. This is an opportunity to bring our other dance instructors to teach us some of the dances they are teaching in their classes throughout the Inland Empire. We always have a great time. You should find flyers that provide complete details at The Lodge and in class. Hope to see you there. Class schedule: Wednesday, 4 to 5:20 pm for beginners and 5:20 to 6 pm for intermediate. If you have any questions, please call Priscilla at (951) 922-0755. ~ Priscilla Robles Exquisitely researched and told at a galloping pace, The Signature of All Things soars across the globe — from London to Peru to Philadelphia to Tahiti to Amsterdam, and beyond. Along the way, the story is peopled with unforgettable characters: missionaries, abolitionists, adventurers, astronomers, sea captains, geniuses, and the quite mad. But most memorable of all, it is the story of Alma Whittaker, who — born in the Age of Enlightenment, but living well into the Industrial Revolution — bears witness to that extraordinary moment in human history when all the old assumptions about science, religion, commerce, and class were exploding into dangerous new ideas. Join us Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 am in the Conference Room at the Lodge to discuss The Signature of All Things. The March Book Club selection will be The Maid's Version, by Daniel Woodrell. Peggy Dashel will be leading the discussion. You are welcome to join us at any of our meetings. For more information about the Book Club, please call Doreen Sanders at (951) 769-1913. ~ Micki Rosen CLUBS & GROUPS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2014 31
