Continuing to Grow and Change in 2014 "All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. 2014 Board of Directors Chairman Jim Hammond Comfort Keepers Finance Vice-Chair Jason Ross Law Office of Linda Roberts-Ross Nancy Kenny Chair Elect PrimeLending Directors Dr. Cheryl Marshall Crafton Hills College Dora Ordonez Asaderos Restaurant & Supermarket Cheryl Benton NuSkin Eric Vreeman YCJUSD Jeff Dewan Edward Jones Financial Advisors CHAMBER STAFF Pamela Emenger, President/CEO Ellen Benefiel, Membership Development Coordinator AMBASSADOR TEAM Cheryl Benton, NuSkin Marlyn Crampton, Yucaipa Rotary Club Jeff Dewan, Edward Jones Michelle Lopez, AVON Debbie Harber, Sequoia Digital Marketing Nancy Kenny, PrimeLending Paul Norwood, Safe Harbor Internet Services Dora Ordonez, Asaderos Supermarket By Jim Hammond, Chairman In my business, Comfort Keepers, we have the pleasure of assisting our senior citizens in their daily needs, but the greatest part of this for me is listening to their history. We've had some family members of the original citrus growers, some who helped start the entertainment business in L.A., many who served in wars from Europe to Vietnam and many local business owners. The changes they have seen from the depression to now is amazing. Maybe one day we'll look back and have stories when Yucaipa was a "small" town of 50,000 individuals. So we have to put this in perspective, for Yucaipa would be in the top percentile of population of many states yet we are referred to as a small town in California. Being originally from one of the states where Yucaipa would be a large city, I have a different perspective. I look at it as we are the gateway to Oak Glen but also to Los Angeles. If we leave here on Interstate 10 and follow it to the Pacific Ocean, can anyone really tell where one city ends and the next city starts? I cannot. Our city will continue to grow whether we like it or not. Our elected officials will have to direct the progress of our growth from the possibility of more roundabouts to big box retailers. We can sit back at home and watch this happen and have future stories of the way it was or we can get involved and say this is the way we want Yucaipa to be. I choose the latter. Being a part of the Yucaipa Chamber of Commerce you can join us in listening to the cities leadership as they inform us of future plans, the reasoning behind the plans and where the funding comes from. It has been an eye opening experience for me and I hope to learn even more in another election year.
