Emergency Preparedness Committee February Tip of the Month: If you haven't already done so, please review last month's article. Realizing that the Holiday Season is full of distractions you may not have seriously considered the recommendations. Starting the new year, it is a good idea to review your emergency pantry items, looking for expired items and updating any new items. Also, this is a good time to recycle your stored water. You can pour the "old" on various plants and refill with "fresh" water. Also, consider having some distilled water on hand. It's also a good idea to check your hot water heater drain valve to ensure that you can open it, and that it doesn't leak. Water purification devices and chemicals are also important — you can survive for a lot longer without food than being without water. As stated last month, there will be some new directions coming for us as we continue our efforts at developing our CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program. In an effort to preserve our progress made so far, yet respond to the actual resources we have at any moment, we need to adjust several aspects of our approach and organization. We will create CERT's that can respond to emergencies in a scalable and effective way. There is a need for a wide variety of skills for our team members, and some critical ones don't require strength or exertion! We will continue to recruit more members and we will continue to have CERT meetings and training sessions on the fourth Monday, in the Lodge, at 6:30 pm. So set your DVRs for your favorite show that might be on then, and come by and see what we are up to. For CERT questions call Bob Hagen at (951) 219-0442. For Neighborhood Watch questions, call Nancy Warters at (951) 599-4523. Resident Coach receives Power of Influence Award Bob Burt, Four Seasons Hemet resident, was a recent recipient of the 2013 Power of Influence Award, from the American Football Coaches Foundation Burt is a 51-year veteran coach of high school and college football and is "a man who has influenced scores of people and helped countless others through sheer displays of positive actions — solely for the purpose of helping the greater good of the community." (AFCA Magazine, Nov./Dec., 2013 issue). Burt started his career in coaching in 1962, and has never held another job outside of football. Burt, currently the coach at Cypress High School in Hemet, doesn't talk of being an influencer — he simply influences by example. He is driven by a personal mission to serve. "When you start to grasp the wide-scale impact that you can have as a coach in this sport, it becomes humbling and provides a deep sense of purpose." Congratulations Bob Burt for being the recipient of the 2013 Power of Influence Award. Buy any breakfast sandwich or regular menu sandwich, get one free!
