COMMUNItY NEWS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2014 15 Emergency Preparedness Program Our tip for the month is: "Be sure to have all your medications, conditions and contacts information listed on your refrigerator." For more information come to the next EPP meeting on Thursday, Feb. 6. ~ Reneé E. Watkins At our January meeting, we reviewed a number of projects for action or discussed for continuing action. The safety side of the committee would like the residents of Four Seasons at Beaumont to remember a few common measures. Please lock your doors to your vehicles and residence. There is a simple rule, if you think something you see is criminal behavior, and then call the police to report it. The Beaumont Police Department encourages residents to report suspicious behavior anytime day or night. The facilities side of the committee would like our residents to remember that many projects take time to complete. There is the initial information obtained. There is a review by the committee on the merits of the project. There is a review of the financial merits by the Financial Committee. And there is an ongoing review and input from the Board of Directors from the beginning to the approval of the project. Our next meeting is Feb. 11 at 9 am at the Lodge. ~ Dennis Gray Periodically the Breeze will publish safety tips from the Emergency Preparedness Committee that residents can use in preparing their households for emergencies and disaster situations. These tips come from the Residents' Emergency Handbook developed by the Emergency Preparedness Committee and due to be sent to all residents in Four Seasons Beaumont in the near future. This month's safety tips are focused upon preparing for earthquakes. PrEPArinG For An EArthquAkE Before: • Pre-position a whistle, flashlight, and bottle of water near your bed below where you sleep. • Prepare your family's emergency supplies kit of food, water, medications, etc. • Make sure that water heaters and gas appliances are bolted or braced to wall studs. • Bolt bookcases, china cabinets, and other tall furniture to wall studs. • Hang heavy items, such as pictures and mirrors, away from beds, couches and sitting areas. • Brace overhead light fixtures. • Use putty-like material (available at hardware stores) to hold down vases and other loose items to keep them from falling from shelves in case of earthquake shaking. • Learn how to shut off the gas valve in your home and keep a shut-off wrench handy. During: If you are inside when the shaking starts… • Drop, cover and hold-on. Move as little as possible. • If you are in bed during what seems a severe earthquake, you should consider quickly rolling out of bed and lying next to the bed and night stand (if you have one). This manner of protection may reduce injuries from falling ceiling fans, ceiling materials, roof trusses, etc. • Stay away from windows to avoid being injured by shattered glass. During: If you are outside when the shaking starts… • Find a clear spot and drop to the ground. Stay there until the shaking stops (away from power lines, buildings, trees, streetlights). • If you are in a vehicle, pull over to at clear location and stop. Avoid bridges, freeway overpasses and power lines if possible. • If a power line falls on your vehicle, do not get out. Wait for assistance. ~ Fred Weck, Survey Team Assistant Team Leader Safety & Facilities sAFEty tiPs For rEsiDEnts Save the date!
