Much to their surprise, members and guests of our club were treated to an array of lovely Valentine's Day decorations when they entered the South Clubhouse meeting room for their regular monthly meeting. It was still January, but the warm colors, candy and Valentines thoughtfulness were appreciated by all. Joan Nolte, President, had previously announced the names of 2014 officers, however she took this opportunity to introduce each board member and asked each to tell a little about her/himself as well as the favorite recipe that had been prepared to share with the membership at the end of the meeting. Both personalities and recipes varied greatly and provided both entertainment and acquaintance. What a great way to give a good start to the new year with its shared responsibilities and good times. The Feb. 28 meeting featured a presentation by representatives of Wendy's, a fast food enterprise that only recently established a new restaurant on Highland Springs Dr. They talked about trends in the fast-food industry as well as some of the challenges and opportunities in the business. Upcoming events: March 23: Our speaker will be Bob Golchert, a master chef who will demonstrate cake decorating and provide not only take-home recipes but also the opportunity for each person to decorate (and eat) his/her own cupcake. Sounds good! April 25: Taste of ethnic culture. May 4: Mothers' Day High Tea honoring mothers and daughters. May 13-14: An overnight trip to Santa Barbara to visit the Santa Barbara Culinary School. May 23: Trader Joe's success story. Details regarding the above events will be reviewed in depth later. If you haven't renewed your membership or become a member, now is the time to do so as you won't want to miss any of these events! Contact membership chairperson Carolyn Wright at 797-3568 for further information. We hope to see you — and your cupcake — at the March meeting! 18 | sun lakes lIfestyles | MaRCh 2014 | soCIal Clubs & gRoups soCIal Clubs & gRoups | sun lakes lIfestyles | MaRCh 2014 | 19 IT'S CHOCOLATE TIME AGAIN! Garden Club Join us March 9, as we celebrate the best duets of stage and screen in a musical revue called, "It Takes Two." Broadway veterans, Stan and Kirsten Chandler, recreate some of the most compelling musical twosomes of our time. Stan Chandler (from the original cast of "Forever Plaid") and Kirsten Chandler (from the original cast of "The Marvelous Wonderettes") met six years ago when cast as husband and wife in a new musical, and they quickly discovered that their voices and hearts were perfectly in tune. Now married, they lend that unique chemistry to classic couplings throughout the century. From Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy to Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, from the immortal stylings of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hart to the more contemporary flavors of Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber… no delightful duet goes unsung! It all unfolds in the able hands of this versatile musical theatre duo as they dive headfirst into romance, clever lyrics, soaring harmonies, and even a bit of hilarious role-switching in this funny, touching, unforgettable evening of song. Kirsten was last seen as the baker's wife in Performance Riverside's critically acclaimed production of "Into The Woods." Prior to that, she honed her baking skills as the title role in "The Baker's Wife" at the Pasadena Playhouse. Kirsten frightened small children as Magenta in Richard O'Briens "Rocky Horror Show" at the Tiffany Theatre, starring David Arquette, and she won the LA Drama Critics Circle Award for her efforts. Other recent shows including Stephen Schwartz's new musical "Snapshots," the West Coast Premiere of "Inside Out" at Laguna Playhouse, the title role in the award-winning "Lulu" at Hollywood Moguls Theatre, the National Tour of "Lunch," and many regional productions of "Little Shop of Horrors." These were just a taste of her many triumphs. Audiences in Southern California have seen Stan in a wide variety of roles, from the earnest Baker in Performance Riverside's "Into The Woods," to the regal Duke of Windsor in the Pasadena Playhouse Premiere "Only A Kingdom," from the ill-fated character of Tony in South Bay's Ovation award- winning production of "West Side Story," to the outrageously pompous Captain Paul Fontaine in San Gabriel's "Desert Song." Stan made his Broadway debut singing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" in the Hal Prince revival of "Cabaret," starring Joel Grey. But he is perhaps best known for creating the nose-bleeding, "Cry" belting the role of Jinx in the off-Broadway smash hit "Forever Plaid." Members $15, non-resident guests $20. Make checks payable to Friendship Club and mail to Bonnie Derrick, 985 Southern Hills Dr. Doors open at 6 pm. Info., Susan 769-0801. Happy Cookers The Friendship Club
