Growing up in Indianapolis, IN, he and his brothers worked in pit crews supporting SCCA racing, and they never missed opportunities to spend time spectating at the racetracks. Sprint car racing was his favorite spectator sport. As an adult in California, he had two '68 Firebirds to keep his interest high, but he always wanted a race car of his own. The perfect opportunity came his way last summer, when he and his wife, Linda Vieira, took a second honeymoon road trip to pick up a Sprint race car in Tampa, FL. The car, pictured right, was built by a NASCAR crewman for his mother, who drove it around Tampa for over five years. Built on a 1986 Gambler chassis, the race car weighs 1800 pounds, and its engine produces over 400 horsepower with a very rapid acceleration. Denny worked over the past six months to add the components necessary to make the Sprint race car street legal in California. He plans to show it off in many car shows and parades in 2014. Denny would love to tell you all about his car at one of our meetings. Our meetings are held on the first Saturday of the month (except December) and you will find all of our members eager to tell you all about their cars. Our Feb. 1, meeting will start at 8:30 am in Ramsey Street Carrows Restaurant. Come join us for breakfast and friendly conversation. Our March 1 meeting will be in the Main Clubhouse with breakfast held in the Main Clubhouse Dining Room. Barbershop Chorus It's March already and spring is just around the corner. May the joy of spring and the luck of the Irish be with you. We will be celebrating spring time and St. Paddy's Day. We have had to defer this to our April meeting due to the special event planned for this month, which is the upcoming Pasta Festival. In February we held our first monthly meeting of the year and those who were there thoroughly enjoyed a delicious Italian style meal as well as a fun time playing bingo. There is still time to sign up for the Pasta Festival to be held on March 7, South Clubhouse at 5 pm. Checks will be accepted through Sun., March 2. The cost is $15 for members or $17 for guests. Call Judy Garthwaite at 797-3130 for more information. Ray Rendon, a special guest, will be crooning our favorite Italian songs. Checks go to Dee Nicoletti, 1479 Boca West, 846-3096. "All Things Irish and Shades of Spring," will be celebrated on Fri., April 4, at 5 pm in the South Clubhouse. (We are a little late celebrating St. Paddy's Day, but this will not dampen our Irish spirit). Don't miss out on the traditional Irish dinner of corn beef and cabbage along with all the fixings. Coffee and dessert will be provided. Please feel free to BYOB. A wonderful group of young Irish dancers will entertain us. Get your dancing shoes ready to do the Irish jig. It's $13 for members and $15 for guests. Again checks go to Dee Nicoletti, 1479 Boca West, 846-3096. It's a fiesta! Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated in typical Mexican fashion on Fri., May 2, at 5 pm, at the South Clubhouse. Music for listening and dancing will be provided by Ed Avina. We also will be honored with the International Dancers performing Folkloric dances. Paisano means "friend." We like to think there are no strangers among us, only friends. Our goal is to make everyone feel welcome. The annual membership dues are $15. Please contact Judy Garthwaite at 797-3130 or Dee Nicoletti at 846-3096 for further information. Arrivederci.
