This is good strategy to call a safety if you realize that the opposing team wouldn't have a shot either. By doing this, once you make your shot you relinquish the next shot to the opposition. They are forced to take their turn during which they might foul (giving you cue ball in hand) or break out the balls so your partner in their turn might have a better chance to run the balls and win the game. This safety shot is described more completely in the BCa rulebook (The Billiards Congress of america), which is the set of rules our 8-Ball Club plays by. speaking of BCa rules, there is a new book published which we have ordered a copy of for our reference. if any rules change that affects the way we play, we will try to illustrate them in coming articles. our latest tournament results: For our monthly 8-Ball Tournament, Kenny Payne and ray Windhorn battled their way to the final round. ray was undefeated in regular play so Kenny coming up from the Losers Bracket with one loss had to beat ray twice. game one of the final resulted on a close game wherein Kenny pulled off the win. The final game also went in Kenny's favor making him the monthly champion. ray Windhorn was involved in the 9-Ball monthly finals as well, wow. ray went into the semi-final match of the winner's bracket playing against dewey allen but ray lost this round this being his first loss of the match dropped him to the loser's bracket but winning that game propelled him into the finals against dewey. alas for ray, he was eliminated by yet another loss to dewey. dewey allen became the Monthly 9-Ball Champion with the win. all in all though, ray Windhorn had a great month playing in both in-house tournament final matches! Congratulations to ray! We practice together at 7 pm on first and third Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Monthly 8-Ball Club Meetings are on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. The in-house 8-Ball tournament is on the second Wednesday at 7 pm. in-house 9-Ball tournament is on the third saturday of the month at 1 pm. our "traveling tournaments" are the second and fourth Mondays of the month. The second Monday, we travel to hemet solera and the fourth Monday solera hemet comes here. Check the message board in the Billiards room for any changes of dates or locations. We meet at the horseshoe Pits every Wednesday at 9:30 am and play until we get tired or approximately 10:30 am, whichever comes first. if you are interested in joining us, please contact ron erickson at (951) 846-3288, rejlerickson@sbcglobal.net or gary Christie at (951) 941-9100, goldtoy@earthlink.net. ~ Ron Erickson Wow! We are 35 members strong! you're probably wondering how we fit 35 members in the four-table Billiards room. yeah. as it turns out, not all members come to play every single week. on Feb. 4, however, we did fill all tables, as 16 people came to play. it was a pretty raucous group, with lots of laughter, kidding, encouragement and high fives. everyone had a wonderful time. There are never any losers — everyone in our group is a winner! By nature, most men are extremely, utterly and fiercely competitive (including the men in the Billiards for Fun group). however, kudos to each and every one of them: they are always very patient and kind in partnering with the ladies of the group, giving them pointers and mini-lessons with respect and concern, and the ladies are improving every week. Thanks, guys! don't get me wrong, there are serious moments. (see top photo.) you can bet, however, that there will be high fives or handshakes for whichever partnership moves on to the next table. Two of our most serious players (see bottom photo), although always out for the win, also contribute to the laughter and fun. Mike saperstein, has instituted an informal practice for the group on saturdays for anyone who wants to practice in order to be in top form for Tuesday play. if you're looking for a good time while sharpening your game, look for Mike in the Billiards room every saturday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Many thanks to each member — you have made the group what it has become. if any of you in our reading audience are interested in joining a really great group please come by the Billiards room any Tuesday from 1 to 3 pm and check out the fun. We're looking to make the 100 member mark! if you need further information, please contact eileen gilbert-antoine at (951) 922-6829 or egcellent@msn.com. ~ Eileen Gilbert- Antoine Billiards for Fun Kenny Payne and Ray Windhorn Ray Windhorn and Dewey Allen Carolyn Parry getting ready to take her shot JoAnne Martin sizing up her throw Below: Pete Antoine and Mike Olsen Above: Ron Erickson contemplates his next shot, as partner Mike Saperstein and opponents Dee Kelch and Lee Harris await his decision with anxious anticipation
