If the first falls on a Saturday or Sunday then sign-ups will begin on the following Monday. If a holiday falls on the first day of the month, sign-ups will begin the next day. waItING lISt POlICy The waiting list is created by the Rec. Dept. for sold out events/excursions. This list is used (in order of registration) when the attendee has to cancel due to illness, doctor's appointment, etc. The waiting list is not used for additional sign-ups for secondary excursions that are scheduled due to their popularity. REFUND POLICY: 1. Cancellations made 30 days prior to the departure date of an excursion or special event will qualify for a full refund. 2. Cancellations made after the 30 day refund deadline are not refundable. ReCReatIon dePaRtment | sun lakes lIfestyles | aPRIl 2014 | 9 EXCURSIONS Santa Monica & Farmers Market Wed., June 4, 8 am - 3 pm, $19 pp. Escape the desert heat for the day and shop in Santa Monica's downtown and weekly Farmer's Market. There is nothing quite like wandering the colorful aisles of the Santa Monica's Farmer's Market. The textures, smells, and visuals! The Wednesday market is the largest and the one most often frequented by local star chefs. Local restaurants make weekly appearances in a food tent. The market is known for its rich bounties of vegetables, cut flowers, live music, breads, cheeses, and delicious food samplings. Grab your friends and mark your calendar, you're going to spend the day in Santa Monica! Lunch on own, on site. Pompeii & Endeavor Wed., June 25, 8:15 am – 4:15 pm, $38 pp. Join us on this wonderful day as we visit the California Science Center to see both the Pompeii Exhibit and the Endeavor Exhibit. The Pompeii Exhibition features over 150 precious artifacts on loan from the Naples National Archaeological Museum in Italy, which offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle and tragic end of this ancient Roman society forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery over 250 years ago. There will be excavated artifacts, multimedia, and hands-on exhibits. The Endeavor Exhibition features images and artifacts that relate the shuttle program to California, where the orbiters were built. The gallery will also feature components that flew into space with Endeavor, such as the Endeavor's potty, galley, and the tires from STS-134. There will be photos, short stories, and the actual Endeavor up close! You may also visit the Permanent Exhibits. Lunch is on your own, on site. There are fast food options, as well as the Rose Garden Café. Thurs., June 19, 9 am - 6:30 pm, $60 pp includes professional escort, docent and lunch at Coco's. The Nethercutt Collection features rare collectibles ranging from mechanical musical instruments and antique furniture to the true heart of the collection: over 250 American & European automobiles dating from 1898 to 1997. Founder J.B. Nethercutt spent a lifetime establishing this collection of historic importance. Unique to automobile museums, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. The entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives, one of the world's top automotive research facilities. For lunch, the group will head to Coco's with a choice of 3 options: Turkey, avocado, jack cheese on a croissant; French dip sandwich; Club sandwich. Nethercutt Rare Collectibles, Antiques Museum & Library Excursion sign ups: TuEs., April 1 Spring Craft Show Sat., April 12, 9 am - 2 pm, doors open at 9 am. It is that time of year for our Spring Craft Show! Sun Lakes residents will have a variety of homemade crafts and goodies for sale. Crafts include jewelry, wood working, paintings, clothes, knitted items, and more! This event is FREE and door prizes will be given out! For crafters that are interested in selling items, a table costs $6 pp, please call Ranae at 769-6652. Fri., April 18, 10 am – 12 pm, Main Clubhouse Veranda/ Driving Range. You won't want to miss out on this Egg- Stravaganza Egg Drop Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to have a raw chicken egg fall from a 14 + ft. distance onto a hard surface and survive the impact UNCRACKED! Your job is to develop a container/device that will protect your egg… either as an individual or a team (max teams of four, judged as different categories, only one entry per person). Of course there is a list of rules you have to follow when you design your container, and we will provide the raw eggs, so make sure you leave a space to get it in your contraption! If this sounds like something you would like to participate in, the cost is $5 to enter the contest, which will go to helping us purchase the eggs and provide prizes. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, as well as "Most Original" for each category. Registration forms can be picked up starting March 7. To celebrate National Volunteer Week, which is April 6-13, the Recreation Department is offering "Volunteer Day" to celebrate our Sun Lakes volunteers and to promote organizations in the Pass Area that need volunteer help. With so many new homeowners in the community, we think it would be a great way to show how to get involved. We will be having door prizes, fantastic giveaways, snacks, and coffee/ice tea/ water. This event is free, so bring your neighbors and friends to participate. If any Sun Lakes resident knows of an organization that would want to participate in this event, please have them call Charlye in the Recreation Department at 769-6651. Volunteer Day Sat., April 26, 7 - 8:30 pm, Main Clubhouse Ballroom, doors open at 6 pm. "We Believe in Music" presented by Richard Byford and Mary Avery is a timeless collection of the greatest folk and pop songs that have changed our lives. Songs that everyone knows and can sing along with the songs that have transcended wars, politics, changes in lifestyles, the birth of children and families, traditions and the musical trends that come and go! Join Richard and Mary, as they celebrate 40 years of performing together, in an entertaining evening of songs, stories and nostalgia that will make you sing, laugh and most of all feel good! Tickets are $10 pp and are on sale at the Main Clubhouse reception desk (checks only / four people per check). The show will be theater seating, first come first serve. Doors open at 6 pm.
