It is time to plant flowers, renew your vegetable gardens, clean out the garage, and all those other things we do at this time of year. With that in mind, I am going to take this opportunity to clean off my desk by discussing some important issues with you. Soon we will be hearing our grandkids singing, "Here comes Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail." I have already sent Peter a message that he might want to avoid Sun Lakes, because of all the bobcats lingering around. Seriously, I want to remind you that directly behind us is a large animal preserve, and our proximity to it means we will be visited by bobcats, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, snakes, and other critters. Be careful when you confront one of these, and be watchful for your small pets. I also want to remind you of a few important tasks you have been asked to perform. The first one is to vote. April 2 is the last day it is recommended a homeowner should mail their election ballot. If it is not mailed by that date I suggest that you wait and deliver it personally to the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on election day, April 9. Your vote is very important, not only to the candidates, but also as it relates to the IRS Ruling 70-604 that authorizes the Association to elect to avoid or defer taxes on excess membership income. Also being voted on this year are important CC&R amendments relating to rentals of residences. The second task is to return your age verification form to the Administration Building as soon as possible. This verification is a federal requirement that has to be done every other year. If we fail to complete the mandated requirements we can lose our status as a 55 and over Senior Community, and that can have a drastic effect on us. I know the letter you received said that we have until August to complete the process, but too many people will put it aside, thinking they will do it later, and forget to do it. Do it now! Let's get it over with so we can move on to something else. Next, I want to point out a project that we really want community feedback on. A few years ago an area of turf, approximately 26,000 sq.ft., was removed adjacent to the 10th Tee on the Championship golf course. For those of you who do not play golf the area is adjacent to the Driving Range, and directly across from the Sandwedge. The turf was converted to drought tolerant plants and mulch, and the irrigation was changed from spray heads to a drip system. Although the water savings was significant, the area never met the aesthetic expectations of management or the Board. We solicited a bid to improve the appearance of the area, and subsequently we contracted Villa Park Landscape to do the work. That work is now completed. We would like residents to review the project and give us their opinions. Please take a minute to walk by the project and complete a comment card. Your comments will be put to good use and be greatly appreciated. Finally, spring means Spring Break for our grandchildren with summer recesses not far behind. We will be seeing more children visiting over the next several months. As a reminder, children under 16 are not allowed to drive your golf cart. If they bring their skateboards, scooters, roller blades, etc. they cannot ride them on the sidewalks or in the streets. The dress code in the restaurant also applies to them, and they must be accompanied to the swimming pools. These rules are there to limit confrontations with other residents, and have been in effect for ever. Just remember, the kids are your guests, and you are responsible for all of your guests all of the time. A reminder to all Sun Lakers – please follows our motor vehicle rules and regulations, and be particularly cautious during the summer months when there are many more children visiting. Enjoy the spring! When should I call 9-1-1?: 9-1-1 is ONLY to be used in emergency situations. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police/sheriff, the fire department or an ambulance. If you are ever in doubt of whether a situation is an emergency you should call 9-1-1. It's better to be safe and let the 9-1-1 call taker determine if you need emergency assistance. Examples of an Emergency; Difficulty Breathing, Chest or Upper Abdominal Pain or Pressure, Fainting or loss of consciousness, Unresponsive, Seizures or Convulsions, Suspicious Activity or Burglary. ~ Submitted by Robin Santillan, Property Services Manager – Any questions regarding 911 requirements call (951) 769-6643
