27 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | April 2014 | | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | April 2014 | 28 Golf Club Great news for the Bocce players past and future: the umbrellas have been purchased with the funds raised from last year's car show. We sponsored a booth and raised $386 and a survey was conducted to ask players where they thought the money should be spent. More than 80 percent had requested shade for the referee's that stand in the center of the courts with no shade during the hot months. The cost of the umbrellas was actually $485.89 and the extra money needed was pulled from a fund that is used to have a welcome back BBQ for returning players. We will need to retrofit the new umbrellas to our existing pole extensions that go into the ground inside a PVC sleeve. Hopefully, we can have some volunteer's to help get our five new umbrellas ready before the first game in September. During March, we had 64 players sign up to play Bocce Scramble with two players on each team. The game is played the full length of the court which is 91 feet. The only rule is don't hit the back board on the other side and we play to 11 points instead of nine points during the regular season. You are in control of all four balls and the game goes much faster. Next month, I will give some viewpoints from the players to pass on to players who would like to try playing next time. The Bocce committee will be meeting on April 11 to discuss upcoming Bocce and activities for our pot lucks, BBQs and banquet. If you have an idea for one of our get togethers, please pass your idea to any committee member, or you can call the number at the end of this article. Committee Chairperson, Ross Brunetto, (951) 926-8295. Bocce Club From the President – Henry Negrete: THE WONDERFUL GAME OF GOLF: Recently I attended a Basic Military Training graduation ceremony at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. My grandson was graduating from Air Force Boot Camp. The ceremony was filled with activity and my wife and I were truly impressed with the proceedings. Sitting in the bleachers watching the parade, I suddenly experienced a series of flashbacks of my grandson growing up. As a child he and I were able to spend time together doing things we enjoyed. I introduced him to golf, something in which I was already involved and of which I was fond. I took him out to the course with me and enrolled him in the Nike Junior Golf Program. He excelled and began to enjoy his outings with me and other members of the family. I wanted him to grow up playing golf and to hopefully some day develop a passion for the game, the same passion many of us enjoy. There are many reasons why I love the game. First and foremost, I get to play with family and sometimes with my grandchildren, the greatest of joys. I also find that the game provides me with a peaceful and invigorating feeling. To be out on the course early in the morning gives me a feeling of serenity and I feel refreshed and at ease. On some occasions, I feel like I don't belong on the course and it was a mistake going out. However, on such outings I find it is not the course but the game itself that gives me a variety of feelings not all consistent with triumph. I often hear other participants complain, scream, throw clubs and threaten to quit playing golf. Not here at Four Seasons, of course, but at other locations. But, at the end of the day, nobody quits. We keep coming back for more. We show up with a new putter, a new driver, and for a lucky few, a new set of clubs. Some go out and take lessons. And we return to the golf course ready to do it all over again. We just can't give up the game. What we do and how we do it varies with each individual but at the end of a round we are all hoping for the same results. We want to play good golf and feel better about ourselves. Of course we do. We want to improve our game and feel better after a round. This allows us to sit at the nineteenth hole and think of our outing as an accomplishment. Something to be proud of and something you can boast about with friends and neighbors. But on the other side of the coin, for those of us not feeling a sense of accomplishment, we need rethink our game, wonder what went wrong and what are we going to change, adjust or repair our lackluster performance. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the game for many of us. But is this enough to drive us away from the game we so dearly love? Not a chance! We will continue to play golf because this is the game we have chosen and the game for we have developed a passion. We have been bitten and we are here to stay. Keep your chin up and good luck on your next outing. From the Tournament Chair – Addis Scott: To play in our Tuesday games, you may sign up at our prior golf event, or sign-up on the sheet located in the Game Room at the Lodge, by Sunday at 12 pm. We are pleased to welcome the following new member, Jay Craney, to the club. We have 174 members with nearly half of those participating in our weekly Tuesday events and there is always room for more. We welcome men and women of all levels of play to join, from newbies on up. New member applications are available from the Lodge receptionist. Should you have questions about joining, call Ross Thomas, (981) 325-2019 or e-mail rthomaspa@yahoo.com. From the Rules Chair – Cliff Post: In the past five years our course has slowly but steadily gotten better. A real effort has been made to improve the areas around the greens, as well as the whole course. Spring is just around the corner and our course is starting the year ahead of all past years, when we think of its condition. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is the 'roping off' of sensitive areas. We have handled this concern with our club's rule, which follows. If you are within three yards of the rope or stakes and they hinder your swing, your stance or the flight of ball you can: 1. Move your ball (by dropping it) back, sideways or in front of the rope to a distance where the rope no longer hinders. 2. Do not drop the stake or rope, please. They never go back in the way they came out and then the ropes are down and carts are driven where they should not. From the Social Chair – Ellen Walsh: SAVE THE DATE! Tues., May 27 is the date for the Golf Club's Barbecue on the Four Seasons Plaza. Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, etc. will be the fare of the day. More details to follow in the May Hemet Herald. Pickleball Pickleball is alive and well at Four Seasons! On any given Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, beginning at 7:30 am, you can find a group at the Pickleball courts. Pickleball is played on a scaled down size tennis court, with a small racket and a hard wiffle-like ball. We play doubles and switch partners after every game. The hardest part is keeping score! We are open to all players, all skill levels and we have extra rackets and balls, so come on out, we'll teach you how to play. We also like to get together socially. For more information, please contact Maggie Aguirre at (951) 325-8116 or Leonard Gleason at (714) 318-4591. Come on out and join the fun. During March, a sign up book for our shuffleboard Scramble was located at the information area of the Lodge. We need to fill two Leagues to make the off season games worthwhile. The club is trying this for the first time to see if there is interest even during our off season. Most folks begin to plan vacations and just getting out of town for a while and would rather play during our normal season which begins in September. During a vote of hands at our luncheon, most of you thought it was a good idea to sponsor an off season League. If we draw low interest, we will try again next year to see if more become interested in playing for fun. These games are helpful to stay in touch with your playing skills and also give players who never played before a chance to learn at a slow pace, with no awards or money involved. You keep your own record of games won and we will take a group picture of all the players and place it in our new Four Seasons Hemet Herald Magazine. We will plan to have BBQ after the last game to celebrate your new and improved shuffleboard strategy. All players are welcomed (new and returning) for a fun outside activity, where half the work is getting to the outdoor Shuffleboard Courts. Invite a neighbor or friend to join us, and remember that players must be a resident to participate. For questions, a flyer is located near the sign up book, or you can call Ross Brunetto at (951) 926-8295. Hope to see lots of players. Shuffleboard
