ecently all homeowners of record received notification by mail of the upcoming Annual General Meeting and Election of four Board Members for the 2014-2016 term. The deadline for submission of candidate statements was March 10. This date came and went and only the four incumbent Board Members stepped up. Be this as it may, by rule, the election process must be followed through to its completion. Accordingly, ballots have been mailed out and (allowing that the required quorum is met), the votes will be counted at the Annual General Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, 2014. In the simplest terms, a quorum must be met before the meeting can commence. This means that a 50 percent plus one quorum of the community must respond. Stated differently, we need 554 ballots "in hand" on the day of the meeting. You do not have to be present but your ballot does! If the quorum IS NOT MET, the meeting is adjourned. The process is then continued and re-scheduled to a new date. This will result in our association incurring additional expenses. PLEASE, PLEASE VOTE! This important act will only take a few minutes of your time. Simply indicate your vote preference on the ballot, place it inside the white envelope and seal it. Place the white envelope in the green (postage paid) envelope and seal it. Then SIGN the green envelope on the upper left hand comer. Drop it into the mail box, or deliver it in person to the front desk attendant at our Lodge. DONE! And THANK YOU. As we approach our 2014 Annual General Meeting and thus the beginning of a new business year for your Board of Directors, we determined it was timely to share some of the thoughts penned by Mr. Kelly G. Richardson in his January 7, 2014 column, "Home front," in the Press Enterprise. Below is a partial list, we will save the remainder for another day. Mr. Richardson graciously granted permission to use this material. He talked about New Year's resolutions (for) Homeowners, as follows: I WILL… • Follow the Golden Rule: (paraphrased, "Treat others as I would like to be treated.") • Not refer to the Board as "they," since they are "us." The Directors are also members who pay assessments and volunteer their time. • Assume our Directors are doing their best as volunteers and give them the benefit of the doubt. • Acknowledge that the Board may have more information than I do. This doesn't mean that the Board is right, but it does mean I might not be ready to form an opinion yet. • Ask questions before criticizing or even accusing. • Remember that the "my home, my castle" attitude does not work in HOAs. We share the benefits of common interest living, which means we also agree to share the control of our property. • Take the long view of our property and support efforts to grow our reserves and maintain our common facilities. • Read the information the HOA sends to me. • Be familiar with our CC&Rs, Bylaws, Rules & Regulations and Architectural Guidelines. I can avoid confusion and disputes by being knowledgeable. • Follow the Golden Rule. Sincerely, and on behalf of your Board of Directors, Tony, Ken, Greg, Ross, Russ & Carey.
