12 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2014 | COMMUNItY NEwS COMMUNItY NEwS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2014 13 Did you know that one of the many theories of the origin of April Fools' Day concerns the European change from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar in the late 1500s? The new calendar moved the new year to Jan. 1, but news traveled slowly in those days and it took many years for the entire country to make the change. Those who continued to celebrate the new year just after the vernal equinox in late March were branded April Fools. Jokes were played on them by their neighbors. Today the primary theme of the day is playing pranks on others. The Internet actually has many pages of suggestions for possible tricks on your friends. Did you know that there really is a National Walk to Work Day? It is officially the first Friday in April; that would make it April 4 this year. The idea was first declared by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson for April 2, 2004. The Special Walk to Work Day was intended to draw attention to the growing problem with obesity and sedentary lifestyles in our country and to encourage the population to get out and exercise. The goal of the day is to walk at least 30 minutes. By adding this small bit of exercise to their every day regimen, people can lower weight, lessen the chance of heart disease, and decrease the risk of diabetes. Residents might consider walking to the Lodge on this day. Given our hills and trails, the walks should be healthy for us. Did you know that April 7 is World Health Day? The day is sponsored by the United Nation's World Health Organization (WHO) and focuses on a different health theme each year. It is an international event to spotlight important health issues or problems. The theme for 2014 is Vector-borne diseases. Vectors are small organisms such as mosquitoes, bugs, ticks and freshwater snails that can carry disease from person to person and place to place. They put our health at risk at home and when we travel. You can find additional information at the World Health Day website. Previous themes include controlling hypertension, mental health, road safety, protecting health from the effects of climate change, making hospitals safe, anti- microbial resistance and making cities healthier. World Health Day proclaimed the first theme, polio eradication, in 1995. Did you know that April 19 is National Garlic Day? Garlic is a vegetable and an herb; it belongs to the lily family. It is used in many recipes around the world. Garlic has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Garlic lovers say that the phytochemicals in garlic are believed to provide protection against stomach and colorectal cancers, help fight off colds and flu, reduce the build-up of plaque in arteries and can be used as a treatment for acne and warts. Given an improper amount of use, it can sure be used to maintain distance between citizens. You can add another word to your vocabulary; the fear of garlic is "alliumphobia".. Mark your calendar for May 17, as that is the date of the upcoming Outdoor Living Home & Garden Tour here at Four Seasons. If you are a new homeowner wondering what to do with the landscaping of your new home, or if you are a long- time resident thinking about making some changes to your outdoor world, this is the tour for you. Residents who volunteer their homes for this tour are more than anxious to share their gardening tips and techniques with you. Big or small, planted or potted, if you feel your home, garden or yard are above and beyond the norm and you would like to share this with your Four Seasons neighbors, please contact tour director Teri DiMarino-Davidson at k9styler@aol.com or (951) 769-4345. Once again, the Event Systems Committee is gearing up for the upcoming Amphitheater production season so be sure to check the Breeze calendar for the dates. They are getting ready for all of the technical aspects that need to be covered to make these enjoyable shows even more so. The volunteers doing this work would love to add a few new members to the team so if you are interested in lending a hand, please contact Roland Harrah at rolandthanh@msn.com. We would love to add you to our roster of volunteers! ~ Teri DiMarino-Davidson Event Systems Did You Know? By Bobbie Eckel
