36 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2014 CLUBS & GROUPS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2014 37 California hosts many different sages and their partners: hummingbirds, bumblebees, wasps, and bees. (Hummingbirds kill for sages. They defend sages in their territory like they are the only water in the desert.) Sages are native in California along the coastal areas, parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and into the upper desert. In areas like the Inland Empire, as much as a third of the vegetation may have been sages mixed with Oaks, California Holly, and Mountain Lilac. In 1912, western writer, Zane Grey's classic, Riders of the Purple Sage, was first published. The title referred to Salvia officinalis also called garden sage, or common sage. Another sage, Salvia leucantha commonly called Mexican bush sage that grows in subtropical climates also produces purple blooms. Both of these plants are found in Four Seasons. The former is native and the latter is an immigrant. Another Salvia we encounter frequently in our landscape is red salvias (S. splendens) or "scarlet sage." Sages are members of the mint family. Some of these plants grow up to six feet in height. They all flourish in warm, sunny locations. Salvia does not like cold temperatures but tolerates brief cold snaps. Sages can live for 30 or more years and are very drought tolerant. ~ Leonard Tavernetti Garden Club Seasoned Solos It's that time again to start filling in your summer calendar, starting with saving Amphitheater Sundays. Since there has been a little confusion with the 2014 scheduled dates, it is listed below along with the wonderful performers. This summer will feature the biggest variety ever and hopefully something for everyone. All performances are on Sundays. Time and length of performance change is for Grand Finale ONLY. may 18, 7 pm: "Where is the love - A one Woman show." Dyan Hobday, singer and actor, has put together a wonderful evening of tunes and tales revolving around searching, finding, losing, and rediscovering love. A funny, sad, and beautiful event to open the Amphitheater. June 8, 7 pm: "Americas Doo Wop Dolls," an A cappella trio. These ladies may be young, but they sure know how to blend their voices to sing those fabulous songs from the 40s, 50s and 60s. You'll have to see and hear them for yourselves. July 20, 7 pm: "the mill creek Boys" sing traditional Bluegrass. This sound was made popular in the 30s and 40s. The Mill Creek Boys give an old-fashioned performance in the style of the fathers of this music. They are regular performers at Riley's Farm in Oak Glen. Aug. 17, 7 pm: "the san Bernardino symphony trio." A wonderful relaxing evening of music under the stars by our local symphony, definitely one not to miss. sept. 21, 6:30 pm. "tony suraci Plus 3." Tony gave us a fabulous performance singing solo last summer. Well, this year he is bringing a couple of his band friends to sing with him for our special Grand Finale night. Please note the half hour earlier start for our final event. I hope you are as excited as we are about all the truly gifted performers we have scheduled for this summer. Thank you to the Board for their continuing support, Roland Harrah and the Events Systems Committee for their technical assistance, and all you wonderful residents who show up so faithfully and enjoy this free event. Looking forward to seeing you at The Amphitheater. ~ Penny McDonell Our March meeting was so much fun. We began with a review of previous costume and prop discussions, i.e., where could we go for costumes, research, etc., how important authentic props are to the actor's production, and where to access them. We also reviewed blocking techniques. A table of props was then displayed, and each member had one minute to choose any one or two of the props and produce a one-minute skit for the rest of us, using the blocking and acting skills previously discussed. It was a lot of fun, and those participants were very convincing as they exhibited their acting talents. Next, each person then pulled a scenario slip from a bowl, and had one minute to act out the scenario. Each participant provided an original and innovative interpretation that had the rest of us either laughing or actually feeling their scary situation. If you are interested in furthering your potential performance skills, come join us! We have lots of discussion, laughter and fun, and there's always an abundance of enthusiasm. Our meetings are held monthly on the first Thursday of the month. Our next meeting will be Thursday, April 3, at 1 pm in the first section of the Ballroom. Come join us and enhance your hidden acting talents. I know you all have them! ~ Eileen Gilbert-Antoine Actors and Directors Club Amphitheater Group Our March meeting was well attended and many ideas for future outings were discussed. So far, our plans for April are "Hemet Evening of Art." This event is from 6 to 9 pm and the cost is $10. It is an evening of wine, cheese, and art on April 12.
