Rich & Brandon Kersten going on our hike in our beautiful hills. Photo by Darcy Kersten. We were inspired to start a new feature titled "Yucaipa Life" by the photo below. Each month, we'll feature a photo and/or story by a Yucaipa resident. So as you live, play and work around town, take some photos and share a moment that celebrates all that is Yucaipa. There was Easter Break, but during that time most students just went home in order to go to church or just spend time with their family. But in 1958, Glendon Swarthout, an English professor at Michigan State, overheard his students talking about a new kind of break. After talking to a group of male students who were going to Fort Lauderdale for their break, Swarthout decided to go along. While on the trip the professor observed rituals (pool-hopping, pith helmets, beatnik jazz) and learned all kinds of new lingo ("beaucoup beers," "schizoid," "babyroo"). When he returned, he immediately penned a novel about coeds who walk the beach and "play house" with boys from other colleges – basically a 1950s version of "Girls Gone Wild." Hollywood executives convinced Swarthout to name the book "Where the Boys Are." As a result, the hit book was spun off into a blockbuster-hit movie, marketed with the phrase "spring vacation." And so the new idea was born. Dairy Queen Happy Hour: ice cream on sale? Sign me up! 99¢ for select Sundaes, Cones, arctic rush, orange Julius, Dipped Cones.
