12 OUR YUCAIPA | APRIL 2014 OUR YUCAIPA | APRIL 2014 13 Several families prank each other ruthlessly on the first of April, but how did this fun, silly holiday begin? The most popular theory of how April Fool's came to be goes like this: In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued a Papal bull decreeing a new standard calendar for Christian Europe. Before the 15th century, Europe's nations and city-states used the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar moved the date of the New Year from April 1 to January 1, among other changes. Catholic monarchies were naturally its earliest adopters, though later on Protestant nations began using it as well. Given the nature of the reform, both in terms of communicating such a fundamental change to a large population and dealing with critics of the new calendar, some Europeans continued to celebrate the new year between March 25 and April 1. April fools were those who still celebrated the holiday in the spring, and were the subject of pranks and ridicule by those who observed the New Year months earlier. In my family, April Fool's Day lasts the entire month of April. We are brutal and have no boundaries on where our pranks will go. I think April Fool's is the best during years when Easter falls into the month of April. We've come across plastic Easter eggs filled with dirt, fake money and even one time prank lottery tickets. One Easter, my dad pranked me by telling me it was snowing, and acting like I was crazy when I didn't see any snow. A friend, whose family celebrates April Fool's just as religiously as we do, gave his dad a hardboiled egg covered in chocolate and wrapped in an old Cadberry egg wrapper. Now, it is pretty unconventional for a family to celebrate this holiday like we do, but use this day to get back at a sibling for all the pranks they put on you through the years. Go out and by a whoopee cushion or a pack of gum that shocks you when you try to take a piece, or better yet, think of your own crazy thing to do, let your imaginations soar… all month long. ~ By Emily Isaak April Fool's Day: History and Traditions New HigH ScHool/movie tHeater to be built tHiS Summer Yucaipa High School will be torn down this summer vacation and a new building is slated to be erected. The 250,000 square foot, three story, predominantly glass building will be located on the current high school's campus. The school is designed to double as an indoor/outdoor movie theater during and after school hours, in order to offset the cost of construction. "We're super excited about this venture," said AMC Movie Theater Manager/Assistant Vice-Principal Dixie Wood. "It's going to be a great opportunity for everyone in Yucaipa to learn as well as be entertained." The school will be outfitted with the latest fiber-optic technology in the classrooms and, as a thank you for being a partner in this venture, each student will be given a gift card for a free movie ticket at the beginning of the school year. "There will be a lot of job opportunities too," said Wood. "We need ticket takers, popcorn makers, janitors, and more." The only caveat is that students must bring a chair to each class and take that chair home with them at the end of every school day. "We think that folding chairs will be the way to go this year," said Lionel Mutz, Assistant to the Dean of Operations. "We have plenty of theater chairs that will be set up for paying customers but don't think they would be conducive to learning due to the reclining feature." The new school mascot will be a bag of buttered popcorn, nicknamed "Poppy." Also, in keeping with theater pricing, the cost of school lunches will now be increased from $6 per person to $215 per person. ~ By Courtney "April Fools" Taylor
