10 OUR YUCAIPA | MAY 2014 OUR YUCAIPA | MAY 2014 11 The Iris Festival offers flowers, food and fun The Yucaipa Iris Festival is a weekend of good, old fashioned, family friendly fun! Scheduled for the weekend of May 16-18, the Iris Festival is expecting over 15,000 attendees this year. The festival will be running on Friday from 5 to 9 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. The Yucaipa Iris Festival takes place at the Yucaipa Community Park, located at 34900 Oak Glen Road Yucaipa, CA 92399. With no parking or entrance fee, the festival makes for an affordable and enjoyable outing for people of all ages. The main attraction is the beautiful flower show featuring the city flower, the iris, and other blooms in Yucaipa's Community Center. The festival also has over 80 craft and food vendors. The Home and Garden Expo, which will feature some of the local commercial vendors, is one of the main attractions as well. The outdoor amphitheater will be featuring live entertainment all weekend long to keep festival participants entertained. The Yucaipa Iris Festival also has a Kids' Fun Zone, which will have bounce houses, obstacle courses, Midway Games, and face painting to keep the younger attendees entertained as well. You won't want to miss any of the exciting contests going on this year too. The Cookie Eating, Pie n' Cupcake Baking, and Table Setting contests are a few of the must-sees. You also won't want to miss the car show on Saturday, May 17 from 3 to 6 pm in the community park. Please remember the NO DOG ordinance will be enforced in the Yucaipa Community Park all weekend. For more information, please visit www.irisfest.org Suveg Cellars, a micro boutique winery, has been making wine since 2010 and, at the beginning of 2014, opened to the public. Operated out of a specially built, temperature-controlled building behind the home of Craig and Karen Suveg, the winery welcomes tasters Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays by appointment only. Their collection boasts nine different wines: 2012 Viognier, two different 2011 Roussannes, 2011 Syronne, 2011 Grenache, 2011 Syrache, 2011 Syrah, 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2010 Blueberry Thrill, which is very popular. While there are a few vines on the property and a small vineyard on Yucaipa's North Bench, nearly three tons of fruit comes from Temecula Valley vineyards. Craig, a resident of Yucaipa since 1992, has interned with many California wine makers and regularly attends wine-making seminars. "A lot of my education is old-fashioned trial and error," he said. "Theory is great but hands-on learning is more fun." They will be pouring at the Yucaipa Music and Arts Festival on Sat., May 3 and Sun., May 4, in Historic Uptown Yucaipa. Yucaipa Welcomes Winery At the Yucaipa Library 12040 5th St., Yucaipa, on the second Saturday of the month, the Yucaipa Genealogy Society meets at 12 pm. The Society began in 1982 and has been meeting and compiling genealogy information for its members. The 2014 President is Rick Clark who is also the Governor of the Inland Empire Mayflower Society. Yucaipa Genealogy Society is sponsored by the Yucaipa Library.
