Parkinson's Support Yiddish Culture Club What is it about New York City that has produced so much musical talent over the years? It can't be just the fact of great size and huge population; other cities in the world have that. It could be the fact that it is such a mixture of people who originated in varying parts of the world, but other cities have that as well. It is a fact that many talented people go there because the opportunities for discovery are better. However, it is more fun to believe there is something in the water to stimulate this talent in the NYC population! Whatever the cause, on Wed., May 14, at 7 pm, we will expose the genius of composer, conductor, mensch Marvin Hamlisch who, before his death in 2012, had earned four Grammys, four Emmys, three Oscars, three Golden Globes, a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize, making him one of only two PEGOT winners ever, through the new film -ARVIN (AMLISCH What He Did For Love. In this first film biography about Hamlisch, award- winning filmmaker and four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Dori Bernstein, presents a deeply personal insider portrait of one of the greatest artists our time. Candid new interviews with the Hamlisch family and friends include such entertainment notables as Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Sir Tim Rice, John Lithgow, and many others. Son of Austrian immigrants, Hamlisch was born in 1944. He was a musical prodigy and accepted to Julliard at six years old. He defied classical expectations to create his own music, giving his talents to musical theater and pop music composition. By age 31 he achieved unprecedented success and honors with a string of smash hits and then his streak ended. Like many artistic geniuses he had a period of burn-out before rebounding to discover true love and renewed passion for creation. This film reveals the events that led to both his staggering success and, ultimately, his even greater humanity, his creative process, struggles, inner turmoil and breakthroughs. Comments from critics include, "Astonishing life story to appreciate, laid out in detail, well done. A must for anyone into music to watch;" and ". . .a man who loved through his music because it came from the heart not just from his head… a man born in the wrong world, a world who did not know what a precious gift they had in him." Everyone is welcome to enjoy this film with us. Cost for guests is $3 pp; there is no charge for club members. Refreshments will be served. Info., Diane, 769-0130.
