At this writing, the outcome is still a few weeks in the future. Ray Roberson along with his wife, Lawanda; and Herb and Faye Beardon, have steered his team, "Lucky 13," to that first place position. "Takesome-Leavesome" (Jerry Schneider, Jim Allen, Ed Quirke, Jim Ming), only 1 ½ points back, are snapping at their heels. "Four Play," (Marv & Marty Steggell, Mitzi Tanaguchi, Ken Smelker) are only four points off the lead, so there is still time for one of these teams to surge forward for the win! When one looks at history 30-40 years ago, a bowler that had a 190 average was "King of the Hill," but now with technology, many bowlers have surpassed that degree of skill. George Thiel recently had a 717 scratch series; way-to-go George! The summer league will be starting May 19 at Canyon Lanes, with a short organizational meeting prior to the bowlers taking to the lanes. The 4 Surprises (Joni & Hal Taylor, Terry & Ross Prather) are clinging to a 1 game lead over Shoulda Binz (Elaine & Cleo Higgins, Rolly Freeman & Bob Cochran) with the Pinbusters (Pat & Herb Watson, George Johsz & Gene Sax) only 2 back and Green Machine (LaWanda & Ray Roberson, Darrell Bothello & Mel Green ) only 1/2 game back in fourth. We have 70 teams playing this season, just two short of our capacity! Many of the teams are new to bocce ball, but learning quickly. It's great to see so many people playing a game and having so much fun! The first few weeks found us all bundled up for cold weather. Somehow we knew we would have to pay for the beautiful winter weather we had at the beginning of the year, but bocce ball players are good sports. However, it's always surprising how many experienced teams come to the courts unprepared for our capricious weather. A little wind becomes a bigger wind on the courts. It funnels down the 10th fairway and down Rolling Hills Drive when it blows off the desert, which is most of the time here in the Pass. We love it in hot weather, but not so much when it's chilly. Like a Boy Scout, be prepared! The Spring Tournament ends the week of May 19, with playoffs the following week. Entries for the Summer Tournament must be in by June 6, with play beginning the 16th. Remember we play later in the summer in an attempt to miss the heat of the day. Times will move to 5, 6, 7, and 8 pm (if we need it).
