picklers & paDDlers have a "racqueT" It's May and spring is in the air! The courts are busy and active with many Picklers and Paddlers engaged in the fellowship, competition and good exercise benefits in playing these sports. Our March Madness Tournaments, followed by an incredible BBQ Dinner, was a huge success. Expertly hosted and emceed by Les Ebner, awards were presented to all our finalists in both the Pickleball and Paddleball events. Gratitude and compliments were given to all our player chefs for the delicious food prepared and provided for all our attendees. The Paddleball tournament was the first of our events and played on March 14 and 15. Unfortunately, we had a limited number of players due to some injuries or people on medical leave, or out of town. It's not any surprise that our previous champion, Mike Moore, once again, retained his title. Vasu Devaraj finished 2nd and Richard Carrasco, of Four Seasons, finished 3rd. In the Pickleball tournament played on March 21 and 22, which was enhanced by the participation of Bill Kleiwer (Highland Springs Country Club) and Richard Carrasco (Four Seasons), our gentlemen finalists and winners were: #1 Jim Hodgson, #2 Elmer King and #3 Dan Cosner. In the ladies Pickleball tournament, which unfortunately was hit with injury, we had fourteen participants compete in a twelve woman tournament. Winners in this event: #1 Nancy Ebner, #2 Bridgett Greb and #3 Jackie Newman and Nancy Watterson tied. Special recognition to Bridgette Greb, for bringing a few of her beautiful and amazing pieces of art to display and sharing with everyone how her passion and gift brought these canvases to life. Additional thanks to Michael Moore for donating the Maglite Mini Flashlights that were given to all the finalists. First place winners in each tournament were given a $25 gift card to Sun Lakes, which was provided by the proceeds of the club's treasury. The most sincere appreciation of gratitude goes to both Les and Nancy Ebner for co-coordinating the set-up of this entire event from scheduling and running the tournaments to organizing and coordinating the BBQ Dinner, all from start to finish! Our next big event will be in August, so watch for news on this event later in the summer. Pickleball is played Monday through Saturday at 8:15 am, and Paddle Tennis is played Tues., Thurs., Fri. and Sun. at 8 am, as well as Tues. and Thurs. evenings at 5 pm, with DST affecting evening play. Equipment is available for new players and anyone interested in more information can contact Royce Newman 769-1103 for additional information. 32 | sun lakes lIfestyles | May 2014 | sports Clubs | sun lakes lIfestyles | May 2014 | 33 8-Ball Group Season Winners: The Sun Lakes 8-Ball Group's Winter 2014 Season ended on March 27. Hank Huisman's Long Shot team out shot the competition and got their name on the Group's perennial plaque. A new season began April 3 and will run through June 26. Two days later, a year-end awards presentation and catered dinner will precede our summer hiatus. A new year will begin on Sept. 3.
