This has nothing to do with how you voted. It refers to recognizing the importance of the process. Without the required amount of participation, a quorum, the community cannot operate properly. It is only when we have a quorum that we can elect our officials and make changes in our governing documents. The voter responses, about 63 percent, did not satisfy the required super majority, 66.6 percent, to pass the changes in our CC&Rs, but the participation was still far greater than many community associations are able to get. Many communities have a very difficult time in getting a simple majority to cast their ballots. When this happens the process must be repeated until their quorum requirement is finally met. This is very costly. In fact, one association president told me that they were forced to go to court to get their quorum requirement reduced, and they still have problems meeting the reduced amount. Would we like more participation? Sure, but that may be wishful thinking. Congratulations Sun Lakers, your sense of community pride and responsibility is always evident. Congratulations to the winners of the election, and David Frank as well. David was running against three incumbents, and he knew that was going to be an uphill battle from the start. He presented his campaign in a professional and dignified manner. The number of votes he got certainly shows that he garnered a lot of support in the community with some of his ideas and suggestions. Notice: Those who go to the Main Clubhouse Pool regularly know that we have had a problem with the Kool Deck surface peeling off in some areas. This is problematic in many ways. First, it is cosmetically bad. Second, the edges of the peeled surface can be sharp and cut people's feet. Finally, the changing surfaces can become slippery creating dangerous conditions. The Board is aware of this problem and has been working with the manufacturer and installation contractor in an effort to find a solution. This process has been slow. In fact, it has reached the point that legal action may be the only solution available. We have been, and will continue, discussing this matter with counsel to insure that we do not lose any of our legal rights. To protect our residents from the dangers of this situation we are covering the areas of immediate concern with mats. This will not be as pleasing to the eye, but the temporary solution will allow safe use of the facility while our experts review the problem and provide us with permanent solutions. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter, and will keep you apprised of what is going on with this issue. On a personal issue, not as a Board Member, I would like to discuss an issue relating to the City of Banning. That is maintaining the current Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) of 12 percent that will be on the June ballot as Measure E. This tax is placed on visitors staying overnight in a hotel/motel in the city. It is not a new tax. It has existed since 2009, and does not affect you as a homeowner in any way. In 2009 voters approved increasing the TOT from 6 percent. That has had the effect of increasing revenue by approximately $300,000 annually. Even with the additional revenue since 2009 city personnel positions have been cut by 36 percent and city services have been greatly reduced. I don't know about you, but I do not think as citizens of Banning we want to see city personnel or services cut any further. I'm voting for the extension of the TOT. A class to train Sun Lakes residents on how to perform "Hands Only" CPR and to effectively use the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) will be conducted by San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Nurses in the lobby side of the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on Fri., June 27, between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. (There are four AED's in Sun Lakes; one in each Clubhouse and one in the Championship Golf Course Pro Shop.) Class size will be limited to 50. If you are interested in receiving this life saving training, please register at the Receptionist desk in the Main Clubhouse Lobby by June 13. REGISTER FOR CPR & AED TRAINING
