Tops (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) 38 | sun lakes lIfestyles | May 2014 | health & sports Clubs It was a sunny Saturday in March when the confident but humble boys' tennis team from Banning High School cruised into Sun Lakes with their racquet bags over their backs hankering for a showdown with their surrogate grandparents. The balls and the sweat were flying everywhere but when the dust settled, the T-shirt was right. "Old Guys (and gals) Rule." The boys were good losers and seemed consoled by the table full of pizza and sandwiches. A rematch on their home turf is planned for May. Their tennis program is a bit strapped so if you have any unbroken and unused racquets hanging around your garage, the team could make good use of them. Call Dave Huetten at (541) 948-5348 and he will pick up and deliver to the coach. May 10 will be our next quarterly meeting. Meeting will start at 5 pm followed by a catered fiesta at 5:30 pm. Bring your best homemade salsa and enter the competition. A wonderful prize for the winner and all attending will be in the drawing for a great door prize. This will not be a potluck as originally listed in the annual schedule. It will be catered and there will be no charge to members. Be sure to get your names on the sign up sheet in the South Clubhouse. Wednesday evening pizza and beer is back. The next is scheduled for May 21 with tennis starting at 5:30 pm. Cost is only $5 and even if you don't play it is a good time to come out and have a slice or two with friends. A good time is guaranteed to all. Our club mixed doubles championships are coming up June 21 and 22. It is not too early to pick your partner and tune up your game. The word on the street is that there are some new alliances already being formed. Remember you must be a Sun Lakes resident and be a club member. This means you cannot bring in a ringer off the tour as your partner. Sorry, Peggy. Even though John Isner is cute, you still have to play with Dave. The answers to last month's trivia: Eve Rusk was the first president of the club back in 1989 when Boris Becker defeated Ivan Lendl and Steffi Graf defeated Martina Navratilova to win the men's and women's US Open titles. You probably knew that off the top of your heads. To make it a bit harder, who won the doubles titles that year, and what ever happened to the losers of the mixed doubles? Tennis Good exercise! A fun activity! Great people! That's what you'll find with us. Haven't played since you were a kid? Doesn't matter… we have players of all skill levels. We play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4 - 6 pm, and Sat., 10 am - 12 noon in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (normally). See the Events Board across from the Main Clubhouse Reception Desk for more information. You can also check on-line at www.sunlakescc.com and click on "Recreation" then click on "Classes," and finally click on "Table Tennis Group." Tennis shoes required. Info., Frank and Clara, 845-8462.
