Golf Club From the President – Henry Negrete: Golf Etiquette Please allow me this opportunity to discuss a broad and varied subject. Golf etiquette is not a subject of discussion on Tuesday mornings. However, if you are an avid golfer or just a hacker, golf is something that is ingrained in you as a golfer. Subconsciously it has become part of you in mind and in spirit. Each time I step out on the course with our golf club, I think of what it is that we are lacking and what can we do to expedite a round of golf. On this occasion I will attempt to give you a sample of what I believe golf etiquette is about. Golf etiquette is a subject with which most golfers are familiar. They look the part and act the part. Some more than others, while a few appear to careless. On occasion, I step back and study our groups and realize that some members are not in tune with golf etiquette. Most would say they are but their actions tell a very different story. So, with that in mind let me touch briefly, on golf etiquette. Golf etiquette begins at home. It's called preparation. The night before a round of golf go through your bag. Do I have all of my clubs? Are they in order? Are they clean? Do you have balls and tees and markers? Are your balls clean and properly identified? Are your golf shoes clean? Go to your closet and find the attire you will wear the next morning. This is more than a game and you do want to look your best among your peers. After all, this is the activity you have chosen. Lay everything out for the morning. You want to show up looking your best and ready for the challenges that lay ahead. In the morning, have some breakfast. Your body needs nourishment. Get dressed and look in the mirror. Do you look sharp? Now, go out on the course and act the part. Don't be shy. Be courteous and polite. Greet other members with vigor and enthusiasm. Pay your entry fee and listen for any last minute instructions. Then, get ready to rock and roll. At your assigned tee, immediately grab your essentials and begin to warm up. If your team leader does not announce ready golf, ask. By asking you are getting the attention of the other participants. In most cases, everyone will agree to play ready golf. Announce your intentions to tee off. In that manner, others will stop their actions and pay attention to you on the tee. If all players pay attention, your foursome is less likely to lose balls and spend unnecessary time looking for them. Please remember to be a silent partner for other members of your foursome. When someone is on the tee, keep in mind this is not the time for you to dig through your bag, move your clubs around, or tell jokes. After all members of your group tee off, then and only then do you walk back to your cart, put your club in the bag and start navigating towards your ball. At your next shot, be considerate of others. Look to see who is away and should be hitting next. Otherwise, declare you are ready to go. Try to carry on with these procedures and hope everyone is on the same frequency. In the end, you will find your team will have played a more efficient and fun-filled round. This will benefit all of us. On the green, well, that's another article in itself. Currently we have 174 members and nearly half continue participating in our weekly Tuesday events. The club continues to welcome men and women of all levels of play from newbies on up. New member applications are available from the Lodge receptionist. Should you have questions about joining our club, please contact Ross Thomas, 951.325.2019 or email: rthomaspa@yahoo.com. From the Rules Chair – Cliff Post: As individual members of our club, we can make an impact on the 'speed of play.' If we set an example we can positively affect others. 1. After hitting a shot, carry your club into the cart and put it in the bag at the next stop. 2. Putt out whenever possible. And always be ready to putt. 3. Move to the next tee box before putting away clubs or writing scores. Those three things would shorten the round and leave more time for the 19th hole. From the Social Chair – Ellen Walsh: Tues., May 27, is the date for the first 2014 Hemet Four Seasons Golf Club Barbeque. Come to the barbeque area at the Lodge at 1 pm for hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and all the fixings. The Hemet Four Seasons Golf Club "Masters Of Barbeque" will be performing their "magic" on the grill. Beverages will be provided. All of this for the low cost of only $6. Tickets will be available at the Hemet Golf Clubhouse prior to Tuesday games starting on Tues., April 29. Tickets will also be available at the Lodge starting the same date. Also, please mark your calendar for the June banquet. The date has been changed and it will be held on Sat., June 28. Blair Becker would like a picture of your wedding and a current photo. Because it takes so much time to prepare the wonderful slide shows Blair and Russ Brown produce, we ask that you forward your photos to Blair prior to June 3. continued on page 12 continued on page 12 35 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MAY 2014 | | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MAY 2014 | 36
