Our June membership meeting is one that we should all be interested in, WATER. Our speaker will be Perry Gerdes from the Banning Water District speaking about water conservation in the home and the garden. As there is a water shortage in California, this should be a concern to us all. If it comes down to water rationing this will be useful information. See's Candy will be sold at the June 11, July 9, and Aug. 13 general membership meetings which occur at 10 am in the Main Club House Ballroom. You do not need to be a member of the Garden Club to purchase candy at these meetings. This is the Garden Club's major fund raiser every year to fund the various donations that we make to local organizations. Membership dues are $15 per year. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom at 10 am. If you would like more information about membership please contact Suzi Messick at 769-7945. GARDEN CLUB TRIPS: June 10 – The Grand Tradition Gardens Tour in Fallbrook and lunch on the property. Even if you have been before, the gardens change with the different seasons. You will enjoy the setting where the luncheon is held and if you went on the last trip to the Grand Traditions Garden, the luncheon menu will be different. The food is presented beautifully and is truly delicious. July 11 – The Lake Arrowhead Boat trip will be offered and seeing the area from a boat will be a different experience from seeing it from the shore. Lake Arrowhead is a lovely area and being on the water is always a relaxing experience. Aug. 4-7: This a date change for a three day trip: Travel to Squaw Valley, Clovis and Fresno. Don't miss this one! If you don't want the fruit that is growing on your trees, please call Doris Harrison at 769-3990 or Pat Shibatta at 769-0316. Don't let it go to waste. It will be picked and donated to one of the local organizations that feed the hungry in our area. We sponsor a Memorial Tree Planting program in Sun Lakes. If you have lost a loved one and they lived in Sun Lakes, you can have a tree planted in memory of your loved one. It is done twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. For more information about this program please contact Carolyn Casperson at 769- 9888 or you can e-mail her at car3sun@gmail.com. Please continue to bring your donations of discarded cell phones, eye glasses, stuffed animals, and small suitcases or back packs. All of these items are then donated to organizations that can pass them on to those in need instead of sitting in a drawer getting dusty. Please call Joan Blumenfeld for more information at 845-6715. GIFT BAGS: We collect all those wonderful shampoos, conditioners, and soaps that you bring home from your trips that are tucked away and forgotten. Why not bring them to our meetings and let us assemble them into gift bags to help those who don't have these items on a daily basis? The gift bags are given to our local charity organizations and are distributed to those who truly need them. For more information, please call Helen Cunning at 797-0407. 18 | sun lakes lIfestyles | June 2014 | soCIal Clubs & groups soCIal Clubs & groups | sun lakes lIfestyles | June 2014 | 19 Garden Club Join us on June 8 for Love Changes Everything, starring Dale Kristien and Jordan Bennett, in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Doors open 6 pm, show starts at 7 pm. These performers come to us directly from the Great White Way, having sung the leads in most of the most successful musicals that have ever graced the boards. For example, Dale will always be recognized and admired for her portrayal of Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical The Phantom of the Opera. Co-starring with Michael Crawford on Broadway and originating the role in Los Angeles, she performed the role of Christine for more than 1,700 performances for its entire four and a half years as L.A.'s longest-running musical. Dale is the only actress ever allowed to perform the role all eight shows a week, anywhere in the world. She also starred as Magnolia with Donald O'Connor in the Houston Grand Opera's production of Show Boat and performing with Richard Burton, followed by Richard Harris, in revivals of Camelot. Jordan Bennett recently starred in two new musicals, The Boulevard of Broken Dreams at the Coconut Grove Theatre and The Education of Randy Newman at the South Coast Repertory Theatre. This is what the Miami Times said of his work in Broken Dreams: "Jordan Bennett is flat-out spectacular as the ebullient, tormented Dubin. Bennett's silky, powerful singing voice was only matched by his expansive driven characterization." Earlier, he starred at the Shubert Theatre in L.A. in a world premiere presentation of the new musical, Masada. He also appeared at the Shubert in Les Miserables, starring as the heroic Jean Valjean. He then went on to Broadway to play another bigger than life character, Cyrano: The Musical. In July we have Poperazzi. They are elegant, versatile, entertaining, and sexy. This trio has blurred the boundaries between classical and popular music. From opera to rock, Pavarotti to Prima, Sinatra to Jersey Boys, these versatile entertainers are like a classic Vegas martini, performing a delicate musical mix of opera with a twist! Members $20, non-resident guests $25. Checks to "Friendship Club" or to 985 Southern Hills Drive. For info. or cancellations call LeAnn Werve, 846-3418 or Judy Powers, 797-0265.
