Hope you have some fun things planned. We never know how much time we have together. Let's enjoy our loved ones while we have them. Our next meeting and caregiver support group is Thurs., June 19 at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. For those of you who are new, the caregiver support group has merged with us. The support group begins after our meeting. This month our guest speaker is Diane Stone. Her topic will be safety gadgets and ID bracelets. Diane is someone you don't want to miss. She has experienced it all, having lost her husband to Alzheimer's disease. She speaks from the heart and is very knowledgeable about so much. Our group is here to help you. Take advantage of all we have to offer. Our Arts and Crafts group is designed to give you the freedom to attend the meeting and support group and not have to worry about your loved one. You don't have to leave them home or get someone to sit with them. Just drop them off at the Arts and Crafts room on your way to the meeting. We play games, take walks and have entertainment and exercise for them. This month Susan Brown returns with great music and voice. For those who wish to participate, Shelly Braats leads us in light Tai Chi. Our very capable volunteers have lost a family member to Alzheimer's and Dementia disease. Our goal is to make the few hours your loved one spends with us a happy and positive experience. Come check us out. Call me if you want to know more: Anne at 845-8700. If you have questions, or would like to learn more about memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, we have reading materials we can share with you. Call Shirley at 845-2008. Memory Care Group (Formerly Alzheimer's & Dementia Helpers) Continuing with our educational information (50 things you should know about Alzheimer's disease), here are numbers 45-49. 45: It is important for caregivers to eat right, exercise and get enough rest. 46. All caregivers need help. 47. Caregivers can get help from other family members, friends or community organizations. 48. Many communities offer support services such as meal delivery, in-home care, transportation, adult day care, or respite care. 49. Your local Alzheimer's Association, Area Agency on Aging, and senior center are good places to find resources in your area. We meet January through October, typically on the second Wednesday of the month, 11 am - 12:30 pm in the Main Clubhouse Bus room. There are discussions on the latest findings and research, medications, nutrition, exercise, and coping skills brought to us by various speakers. Come to our group to learn and share your experience with others. Info., Gerri Piechowski, 769-2305. Parkinson's Support Yiddish Culture Club Have you noticed that as we gain in knowledge and experience (meaning years) the "Good Old Summertime!" seems to get better and better in our memories? Either we have forgotten about the hot, humid days and nights of summer on the East Coast, South, or Mid West, or we are native Westerners who didn't have to put up with the humidity of cities like Chicago. None of the people I knew had air conditioning when I was a child. We had electric fans at home that helped a bit and some restaurants had air conditioning if you could afford to eat out. Movie theaters had air conditioning and were cheap for kids but because of the Polio epidemic most mothers wouldn't let their kids attend. But there were two places you could go, in my neighborhood, to cool off — the corner drug store and the ice cream parlor. The drug store in those days was much as it is today except smaller but it did have a counter where you could get a chocolate phosphate (Chicago) or an egg cream (New York) or a soda or sundae and it came complete with a teen age male "soda jerk!" It was also the gathering place for kids of all ages on a hot summer night when they were not at the beach. In the good old days parents did not worry about kids being out alone after dark. Sometimes my dad wou ld bring a pint of ice cream home for dessert. When you had a refrigerator with a freezer only large enough to hold two stacked ice cube trays you had to eat it right away or drink what was left over! So, in memory of those early days of summertime ice cream treats with friends the Yiddish Culture Club will hold our fourth annual Ice Cream Social on the hot night of June 4 at 7 pm, but this year it will be held in the South Clubhouse. All are welcome to attend. There is no charge for members. There will be a $3 pp charge for non-member guests. We will also have a period of meeting and greeting each other before we present the new short documentary "The Lady In Number 6: Music Saved My Life," one of the most inspirational and uplifting stories of 2014. Alice Herz Sommer is the world's oldest pianist and Holocaust survivor at 109 years old. The film begins with her playing beautiful classical music on the piano and then goes on to tell her life story as a successful Jewish Czech concert pianist who, along with her son, in 1939, was incarcerated in Thereisenstadt — a fake model prison made to fool the Red Cross into believing the Nazis were benevolent towards the Jews, particularly artists and children, but only when outside agencies were watching. The story is not just about the horrors but about how Alice's positive thinking helped her survive in this hell. The reviewer, planktonrules, writes "The film's strengths are its existential undercurrent as well as the amazingly artistic quality of the film itself." As I wrote this article, and having visited many of the camps, I remembered the horror of all of them but Thereisenstadt stands out in my memory as being the worst because of the message that it was made to present to the world and especially by the use and treatment of the children. Hope to see you all at the Ice Cream Social. Please note that the June 4th date is one week earlier than our usual meeting date because we have moved to the South Clubhouse for that meeting. Also remember that June is the month for renewing your YCC membership. Yearly dues are $15 pp and may be sent to: S. Hammer, 1298 Green Island St., or paid at the meeting. Please include a completed membership form which are available in the Main Clubhouse. Info., Diane, 769-0130.
